Subtle reminder: October is Adopt-A-Dog Month
October is
American Humane's
Adopt-A-Dog Month®

Millions of dogs face euthanasia every year across the country because there are not enough caring homes for them. This is why American Humane’s Adopt-A-Dog Month® was established. Celebrated every October, the tradition promotes dog adoptions from animal shelters and provides an opportunity to spread the word about responsible pet care. Improve your life with a dog’s companionship, and support these voiceless creatures.

“There is a great need for people to adopt dogs from their local animal shelters,” says Marie Belew Wheatley, American Humane Association president and CEO. “By adopting a dog this October, or at any time of year, people are saving the lives of these precious animals and giving them much-needed, loving homes.”

"The greatest pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too." ~Samuel Butler

14. LOL. Actually, the puppy is quite the little vegetarian.
I had to put rocks in my yard where I planted my hibiscus so she wouldn't dig them up. She chews on grass all the time.

27. our two greyhounds seldom bark
very quiet dogs...

the pup, Tovah, is another matter - she discovered she could bark earlier this week... at the moment it's limited to barking when she's playing...

We just got one of these:
http://www.ultimatebarkcontrol.com/

Our dogs barked all night long. Hooked it up last night and heard a few barks from them ... then complete silence. No shocks, no collars. OK, so one night might not mean a lot, but I'm sold on it so far.

They might have been the only thing that prevented your abduction by alien life forms wanting to do humiliating experiments on you. Seriously. Good doggies!

29. No, I'm in Chicago. I thought the pups were local.
I get alerts about adoptable dogs though a rescue network but I know 2 other people who aren't in the network who got it the same day. One of them got it twice.

23. I adopted four of them this year.
And a pile of cats. Is that enough? They're all wonderful and I can't imagine life with out them ... but I surely won't be taking any more in the near future. :hi:

I hope all these dogs find great homes. :grouphug:

26. I can't right now......
I have 3 dogs and 1 cat (10 fish in the pond outside) and 2 of the 3 need their teeth cleaned. I'm going to have to break that into a couple of months so I don't get hit all at once.

However, once they have gone to the rainbow bridge (not for at least another 7 years or more I hope), I've decided I will adopt older dogs that have a hard time getting adopted.

31. Every dog I have had in my life except for one were shelter dogs.
:D From birth until now, I've had 12 dogs. The two I have now were shelter sweeties, and our older dog Casey was two days away from euthanasia when we adopted her. I can't imagine life without her or without the mutts I've loved over the years.

34. I'd like to, but I'm not sure whether I should.
I also posted this in the Pets group:

I need dog advice.

Actually, I don't have a dog, and that's why I need advice. I'd like to get one, but I live alone and work full-time, sometimes during irregular hours. Also, I have two fairly young, good-natured cats who haven't been around dogs before (at least that I know of; they were shelter cats). I live in a city neighborhood in a single-family house with a small yard that's partly fenced in (it would be pretty easy to fence the rest of it). I've never had a dog, only cats; but I really like them.

Is it possible to have a dog at all if you are away during the day (a young puppy obviously wouldn't work)? If so, what breed? I'd want a smart, easy-going dog who likes water (I sail during the summer), isn't teensy, nervous or yappy, and who can get along with cats.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That would make four indoor kitties plus the bunny, so that's a lot of fur flyin' around here ...
