Today's College Football Thread--a great slate of games today
Last week was one of the best weeks for college football in a long time, with half of the top 10 losing, several other upsets in the top 25, and a lot of exciting games in general.

Whether or not this week matches last for upsets, there are five games between top 25 teams (and a sixth was played Thursday between South Carolina and Kentucky). The headliner is Florida at Louisiana State in prime time, but there are plenty of other great games to look forward to as well:

Virginia Tech at Clemson
Ohio State at Purdue
Cincinatti at Rutgers
Florida at Louisiana State
Nebraska at Missouri

The one I’m most looking forward to: Oklahoma vs. Texas—one of the greatest rivalries in college football, played at a neutral field in the middle of the Texas State Fair, with half the stadium sold to the Sooners and half to the Longhorns. (In the picture you can see where the crimson changes to burnt orange in the middle of the stands.) It doesn’t have quite the luster that it would have had both teams not been upset last week, but even so this year’s battle marks the eighth straight year in which at least one team comes into the game ranked in the top 10.

Texas has won the last two, but with any luck, the Sooners will bring the Golden Hat back where it belongs, north of the Red River :D

So what games will you be watching?

1. and some other games at the fringes of the top 25
Wisconsin at Illinois--somehow, the Illini, who won two games a year for the last two years, are 2.5 point favorites against the Badgers, who are ranked in the top 10. I know Wisconsin has been winning ugly, but I was surprised by that line. Go Illini!

Kansas at Kansas State--Kansas is undefeated and on the verge of being ranked for the first time since (I think) about 1995. Kansas State is coming off a big win against Texas. It's a bitter in-state rivalry. Should be fun :)

2. Hey, I have a request
I'm TV-less here and I bet that there are some other DUers out there who are as well. Would you guys mind posting the scores of the games in this thread every once in a while? I would very much appreciate it. I'm particularly interested in the Ohio State-Purdue game since I'm from the buckeye state and all.

3. One great way without TV is using ESPN's gamecast.
You've got the score, plays, who's got the ball, field position, and it refreshes automatically.

Good enough for me though...

4. I guess I'll watch a little of my alma mater Texas A&M v. Oklahoma St.
I wish I could be more confident about my team, but I'm just not sure about them. It's a home game, though, so that helps. But, we seem to choke on TV games. This game is on Fox Sports Net nationwide at 7:40 ET.

I think I like Saturdays more than Sundays football-wise these days.

19. He was selling an "all-access" e-mail to super boosters.
This included information on injuries and scouting reports on players which are not made available to the general public. Although there were about a dozen subscribers, the information could have gotten out to gamblers, although there's no evidence of that to this point. The players are behind him, though. The boosters and administration may not be so kind if we have a bad year though. We are 4-1, but after this week, things get really serious though.

As for me, I've never liked the guy from day one. I thought he gave his players at Alabama the shaft.

Certainly being a booster doesn't entitle you to the personal health information of players  I saw some rumors on another board that he was going to be suspended, but I guess that never happened.

I love living here.

If I had that decision to make over again, I might have chosen differently. UT's campus intimidated me with its size when I was 17. A&M's campus was much smaller and felt more "campus-like". Of course now A&M's campus is MUCH bigger.

112. Man, I bet that was a blast
It was an exciting game to watch on TV, that's for sure.

I actually had a chance to go to the game, but I would have had to miss the beginning of the OU Texas game, so I had to pass. :( It looked like a great crowd, and it was cool how many were there even a good while after the game was over.

11-1--who knows? I never would have dreamed 5-1 was possible before the season. But they're playing well. Michigan has to come here, and tOSU is late enough in the season that anything can happen.

No matter what happens from here on out, though, you can remember being at this game for a long time to come :bounce::toast::bounce:

What a great drive that was for Bradford. Great touch on the long ball to Iggy and the one that was called back to Gresham, and great patience on that touchdown pass to Gresham.

66. It was quite pretty ...

I was a tad concerned, though, that he kept going to the long pass. Seemed almost like a desperate "I'll get this done one way or the other" move, perhaps trying to rebuild his confidence after last week.

Since it worked, seems all good.

Exciting game so far. Never seems to disappoint there.

Because, good as he looked on those, I don't want him having to rely on that either.

OU ball inside the 10--hopefully another long drive coming up ...

70. Back and forth so far ...

So far this seems to be the most equally balanced game in awhile. Defenses are beating each other up pretty good.

Bradford has a lot of composure when being sacked, btw. A lot of seniors would panic facing what he has so far.

Yeah, Bradford made good decisions not getting desperate on those last two plays. What is up with the Offensive Line, though? That's supposed to be a strength. They are not looking great today.

Edited on Sat Oct-06-07 03:43 PM by RoyGBiv
That's about all I can say. :)

I get irritated with television coverage, and it makes me want to be there all the more. I'm having trouble seeing the "push" on a snap and seeing what's really going on. Not sure if people are missing assignments, getting overpowered, or just outrun.

75. that does make a difference :) but they've got another good-looking drive brewing
I know that Texas's scores have both been quick, but I like that we've had more success sustaining drives, since ball control is what killed us last week and since it's apparently really hot in the stadium today.

Texas's O-Line is doing a good job of picking up our blitzes, and their TE is killing us, but if OU can get that problem solved (and maybe tackle a little better), we should be in good shape.

...and OU keeps a decent O-line, he's gonna be scary good.

That kind of patience in a freshman is just unbelievable.

76. nice tackle by the umpire
:)

Bradford really does look wise beyond his years in the pocket. He's going to be fun to watch over the next few years. The only thing that worries me is that we lose a few from the O-line after this year, and--as Colt McCoy last year vs. Colt McCoy this year demonstrates--that can make a pretty big difference.

78. True ...

The composure aspect is what encourages me. If he were more nervous in the pocket and was making a lot of bad decisions, I'd really worry about next year's O-line makeup.

Of course the O-line is always (an often under-appreciated) factor in any quarterback's success. Josh Heupel was a clear beneficiary.

82. I think you're right that his composure will be a huge factor
He is so collected it really is easy to forget that he's a freshman. He doesn't ever panic, doesn't seem to get rattled, doesn't lose his confidence, and he also keeps level when things are going really well, too. And he's only going to get better :)

I wanted to see Texas-Oklahoma but what do they broadcast here- either Penn State-Iowa (eh) or Florida State-NC state-(and I loathe Florida State). Even the alternative network SEC game Georgia-Tennessee is a blow out. Guess I will watch the Va Tech-Clemson game at 6. Seems like that might be a good game.
Ah well, my Terps did win, even if what should have been a blowout turned into a squeaker at 28-26.

Gotta say though, it's the only rivalry game I've ever regularly attended where I wasn't made to feel like scum after my team lost. Texas fans in the West End after one particularly heartbreaking OU loss bought my friends and I all steak dinners in consolation. We ended up paying them back with the bar tab, and a good time was had by all.

142. unbelievable!
I know that USC has been playing with fire against a lot of lesser teams, but this week they really got burned. :wow:

144. Go BEARS!
If LSU loses then CAL WILL BE #1. As a Cal grad, (and an old one, too) I am close to nirvana.

147. I'm a Cal grad and an LSU grad - I'm pretty conflicted, but either way I'll have
a #1 team. How weird is it to be happy about a Stanford win?

148. Totally weird
Rooting for Stanford has this sort of unclean feeling about it. But what the hell. It's not like I've never had an unclean thought before.

145. This has been another incredible week of college football
It's hard to imagine anything approaching last week, when five top 10 teams lost--but this week three have lost already, including two in the top five, with another top five team trailing by ten.

Overall this has just been an amazing year to be a college football fan.

149. A&M is going to beat OK State, 24-23.
A&M trailed 17-0 at the half and came back to win. :woohoo:

151. Well, from here on out, the schedule gets a lot tougher.
We need as many of these wins as we can pile up so we can go to some sort of bowl game.

Thanks, and congratulation to the Sooners. That was a good game.

153. LSU wins!! No doubt about who's #1 now!
Great game from Florida, however - hope we don't see them in the SEC championship...
