I am seriously considering giving up fried foods and red meat... |
|
Every time I eat steak or too much fried food, I get that scary upper back pain. Probably means I'm flirting with a heart attack...:eyes:
I don't feel healthy at all. But sometimes I crave red meat so badly I can't stand it. Anyone else have that problem?

1. Not me... if the saying "you are what you eat" is true, then I'm a big chicken. :) |
|
Because that's 90% of the meat I eat right there.
I was raised by a health nut though, never gained much of a taste for red meat. First time I ever had an actual steak was when I was 18. I much prefer lamb to steak myself.

2. I did this back in 03..... |
|
Until 2005.. Got divorced etc....I lost a lot of weight, felt much healthier etc. I cannot afford to do it now, and of course I have put on all that extra weight.

3. try moderation instead of deprivation |
|
you don't have to give up either, just take it easy and try smaller portions, healthier cuts and oils and make the "bad" ones more of the occasional treat instead of a regular choices. Exercize a little more, too.

4. Well, if you think those things are the culprit, then try it for 30 or 45 days. |
|
Compare how you feel today, and then a certain amount of time into it. You can make your decision based upon your own findings and go from there.
I gave up red meat a long time ago, and I can remember feeling quite a bit better even though I was still eating chicken, seafood, eggs, dairy, etc. Shit's toxic.

8. Cut out the fried food first, go to leaner, smaller portions of meat, and add fruit and veg |
|
Certain cuts of beef actually have, on balance, more good fats than bad

10. I've cut down the meat BUT |
|
The meat I'm eating is grass fed, pasture raised. Pastured pork, free range chickens.
It's expensive, but we eat less of it. Try using meat as an adjunct rather than a main source. Also, go for smaller portions.
Take Michael Pollan's advice - "Eat food. Not too much. Plants mostly." And don't eat anything that your great-great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
If you find that a lot of the things you're eating have unpronounceable ingredients, stop and get some real food. Not processed crap.

12. think of meat as a condiment |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-07-07 12:02 PM by grasswire
Prepare some of those luscious grainy casseroles and roasted vegetable dishes, or big stir fry loaded with your favorite vegetables, with a small amount of meat.
If you are CRAVING red meat, I wonder if you are getting enough iron elsewhere in your diet. Perhaps you need to add a multi-vitamin with iron, or lots of spinach and other iron-rich foods to see if that helps with the craving.
Oh, and fried foods? What are you thinking?

13. We fry everything down here |
|
I MUST stop eating it. Fried chicken is like crack cocaine to me....fish and chips too.
I have cut out the processed meat (hot dogs, sausage, bologna etc).
I'll start taking a multi vitamin. My SO's been on to me about that of late.

17. if you can get BBC America, check out a show... |
|
...called "You Are What You Eat" -- it will be very instructive, and you will not feel alone in your effort to change your diet.
Also, if your magazine stand has a magazine called "Eating Well" it's worth picking up. You'll learn a lot, drool over the recipes, and be inspired.
And come join us in the baking and cooking forum here on DU!

14. I also get that gassy pain up in my shoulder blades |
|
after I've eaten too much greasy food. I haven't had, what I have read, as a full blown Gall Bladder attack with the hours of vomiting, but I believe I could be on the precipice.

I'll be in pain for hours and then as soon as I sip a little Maalox or Pepto, it alll comes back up and I feel 100% better.
