Maybe this shouldn't piss me off
I was at our sailing club today (It's really a "yacht club", but we don't have very big boats). I was talking with a member, "B", who is much more experienced at sailing than I am, and has been a racer for years. I invited him to sail with me on my boat some day and give me a few pointers. He turned me down flat, saying he was tired of teaching people how to sail.

That in itself was annoying, but there's more to it. After the last hurricane, he was wiped out and homeless. A few days after the storm I hadn't heard from him, so I called and left a voice mail asking if he needed anything. He called me back, and said yes. He was homeless and needed a place to live. I had a tennant in my garage apartment who had been violating his lease, and I told him I had a storm victim who needed the place, and more-than-gently nudged the guy out so my friend could have a home. I never asked for anything in return, and today I invite the guy to sail with me, and he acts like it's a huge inconvenience. I didn't ask to sail on his boat. I invited him to sail on mine.

I don't feel like I need to be rewarded for helping the guy, but this was a slap in the face. He's retired, and sails all the time anyway, so what's the harm in sailing on my boat?

Am I wrong to be pissed?

1. Not in the least
Considering the circumstances he was incredibly thoughtless. I would feel the same as you.

2. That would irritate me
I can understand the concept of being sick of teaching people to sail - I used to field requests all the time from people who wanted to learn how to ride. Seems if you have horses, you should be ready at all times to teach everyone and their brother how to ride them. It does get old - it takes time, it's work, etc.

However, in a case where the person was someone who'd been a good friend to me in a time of need, I'd be happy to return the favor.

Maybe it was a bad day for him but yeah, that would bug me, too.

4. You think perhaps he forgot your kindness back then?
 sure sounds like it. If he hadn't been given a place to stay at that time, do you really think he would be sailing now?

5. Question?
How big is his boat? Could he have lived in IT? You know...considering. My take on it? He's a jerk.

7. Sorry. I just reformatted and went back to IE. All I see is a little
red x. Anyway, I still say the guy is a jerk. The world is full of them, anymore.

8. He's a true asshole, and you should invite him out of your life. (By the way, we also have
a "yacht club" in the next town over which only ever sees a yacht when one sails by in the far distance. It's a really cool, shabby place with the average member's "yacht" measuring about twelve feet. So I know not to be fooled byt the "yacht club" name.)

10. Very funny
FYI: My yacht is a 30 year old trailerable boat that leaks. I spent $3000 for it, but only because it had a new trailer.
