I'm once again sad for Cubs fans — has anyone in sportsdom suffered for so long? — and perhaps the most for Ron Santo, the only "homer" announcer for whom I'd ever give a splintered fungo bat. They keep cutting off bits of his body, which once played third base as if he'd invented it, but they can't get anywhere near his heart.
At the same time, I'm happy for Rox fans. No matter how many times you get the Big Win, the first one remains the sweetest. I'm also quite pleased as an NL Westerner; maybe now people will stop thinking of the division as baseball's idiot nephew. As a bonus, an NLCS with two small-market clubs, both in the vast emptiness of Mountain Time, is sure to be a spiny thorn in the right (wallet side) buttock of baseball's brain trust, as well as TBS and Faux Sprots.
Maybe this first round will end tomorrow. If it does, I could hardly be more pleased, for it would then seem that the stars and planets are in alignment — and eating hot dogs.

3. I'll be supporting the American League team |
|
in the playoffs this year. Cannot support Arizona after all they beat my Cubbies and well I don't much care for Colorado either.

That was touching. I agree - no city deserves a championship more than Philly! I am disappointed - the Phillies had a good season, and I think Manuel should stay because of his Manager-of-the-Year like performance, but I think most of the players were satisfied with getting to the playoffs. The Rockies are hot and played very well, no doubt. But for that Phillies team to bat .178 or something in the series, and to lose 3-0, is just embarrassing. I hope it was just because a lot of their players were tasting the playoffs for the first time.

Our lot in life is suffering. We are Cubs fans. Will you deny us what gives our lives meaning? Leave us to suffer in peace.

8. My friend didn't believe me |
|
when I told her of the Cubs' history as the final moments of the game ticked by Saturday night.
Me: "Looks like the Cubbies are going down. I was really hoping for them this year. If for no other reason than they wouldn't have to mark a century of futility next year."
Friend: "What do you mean?"
Me: "Next year is the 100th anniversary of the last time they won the world series."
Friend: "They haven't won a championship since 1908? That's impossible. Are you sure?"
Me: "Certain. They haven't even been in the Series since 1945."
Friend: "How can that be? I mean, even statistically, they should have made it at least that far by now."
Me: "Now do you understand why people think the team is cursed?"
I'm a Bears woman, but I send out much love to all the Cubbie fans out there. We'll get through it together, just like always.
