I just got tattled on by a dachshund.
I took away my dog's denta-bone because she growled at my for getting near it, and what does she immediately do? Go over to my husband and get into his lap. He's loving on her, and she's looking at me like see? Daddy loves me. God, dogs are so much like children. I just don't want her getting food aggressive. This is freaking me out. I stick my hand in her food all the time in her food dish. She doesn't flip. But over this bone she's wigging. I suspect she was starved at some point in her life as she horks down her food. What the heck do I do about this?

1. My dog's the same way...

he's fine with his food but if I dare go near his bone he goes ballistic. I don't think my dog has ever missed a meal!

on edit: He's a weiner, too.

2. So, they're just protective of their bones?
Do you leave food down for your weiner all day, or do you feed her/him twice or three times a day?

3. sounds like it, YRD
perhaps it's just instinctive from way back for animals to guard their bones, lest they go hungy. I'd say if she's only doing it for her dentabones, perhaps it's OK. You need to kick your hubby's ass though :7

9. Tooo sweet.....
The ONLY thing I miss about my now former roommate is his miniature dachshund. I fell so in love with that dog. They are so sweet and loyal.

I just wanna kiss that doxie's ears!!!

Golden Retriever's used to be my all time favorite dog, but they have been displaced by the dachshund.

7. Dachshunds don't mess around with food.
I had a doxie, when I was kid. (RIP Penguin). He was very serious about his meals. If it was edible, it was his.

10. They also love to chew
Guido loved his chew toys and if they squeaked that was even better.

12. My methods....
The first time my dog growled at me when eating (canned food, not something he gets every day) I picked at him even more until he actually half-heartedly snapped at me. THEN I picked up the bowl and made him leave the kitchen....where he stood in the doorway and watched while I gave the kitties permission to crowd around and have a feast from the dog bowl. The look on his face was PRICELESS. I knocked him down a few notches in the pack - a reminder that he's below me AND the kitties and he ought not forget it.

The second time he growled at me was a couple of weeks ago and it was over a bone I'd given him. I showed serious disapproval, put him on a down and took it away. That again reinforced his place in the pack - which isn't at the TOP. He wasn't allowed to get up from his down until I told him he could -and he had his bone privileges restored at that point. I couldn't get him to growl at me again after that..... :) Him is teh smrt!
