8. hey I've run across lots of people around your age

in some classes. Like writing and American Indian courses. People like to come back to school and enrich themselves. :)

So how do you like the class? I'm solid at poetry, not really my thing. I got some stuff that my professors and a few other writers etc think I should publish, I'm sort of polishing it up. Maybe send it off soon. My serious work is more in short fiction and creative nonfiction, but I don't mind writing a good poem from time to time. I'm actually reading a few poetry books right now. One by Sherman Alexie and two by Joy Harjo.

It's raw, but it's there. You have a natural gift for depicting emotion in a manner most readers can identify with.

Basically, I would suggest, if you want to get some stuff published, is to find a magazine you would like to send some stuff off to, then follow their submission guidelines and just send your work off. But look at the magazines and figure out what kind of work they are looking for. For example, it's tough to get published in say the Atlantic Monthly or The New Yorker if you haven't had anything published before. Like the Atlantic Monthly turned down my first published story, but then eventually somebody ended up picking it up. Also some magazines are looking for specifics, like say in my case, I am a Blackfeet Indian and I write almost exclusively about Indians. So I've had a few things published in Red Ink Magazine, which is a Native run magazine. But yes, take your best work, get lots of feedback on it, edit it and edit it and edit it until it's perfect and just send it off.
