15. I have to figure out what I'm going to do about heat.
The arthritis is requiring some degree of accomodation. I'm getting sensitive and tempermental. :P

They'll turn on the furnace on the 15th. My choices are either too cold or too hot. If I have them finally repair the radiator in my bedroom it will be 90+ degrees in there all winter. If I don't have it repaired then I'll spend another whole winter with no heat in my room.

Yes, perhaps I do have a bit of ADD. Oooh, look at that over there! :P

16. Fully focused
until something shiny catches your eye. ;)

I use a radiator-style heater in my room. The vent it too small to heat a room that large. It keeps the room tolerable. It might be a good compromise. They're radiant heat, no fans and not easily tipped over and you can order them online for delivery.

I don't know if your system could take 90+ in your room and cold outside all winter. Too much.

I think there is a reason WHY I didn't finish grad school. I was meant to complete the entire history of the Smith family (well, MY Smith family)! :D

27. just a couple of words of advice
Edited on Fri Oct-12-07 10:26 AM by DrDan
First - I believe you should begin thinking about your dissertation on day-one. This will be the bulk of your effort - as the coursework will be a continuation of prior college work. If you know what you are headed for with a dissertation, you can focus many of your course assignments along those lines. For example, I substituted a significant literature search related to my dissertation topic for a course paper. Saved me tons of time.

Next - try to line up an advisor who has a similar interest - and who may personally benefit from your research efforts. This helped me immensely - kind of a symbiotic relationship was formed.

Third - take care with the other dissertation faculty advisors. Don't get caught in a situation where one retires, or moves on. This can create some real havoc.

Know the dissertation requirements inside and out. Follow them explicitly. If a specific font is recommended, then make sure to use it. You cannot be too anal when following these guidelines.

Don't get behind with any coursework. I have known candidates who just put off final papers, thinking they would get caught up. They never did and ended up dropping out.

Make sure you have family support. They will be making a huge sacrifice as well for the next few years.

Know when to go for outside help. My dissertation in it draft form was around 400 pages. I would get notes from my advisors like - "watch your use of commas". So I would start a new reading of of the 400 pages looking at comma use. I finally went to a local university and hired a graduate student in English who know the format that was required. Those few hundred dollars finally got me over the hump. She found all kinds of changes that were needed - things I had overlooked many many times.

Hope this helps . . . and good luck.

on edit - oh yeah - you will love being called Dr. It is recognition of a heck of a lot of work.

30. two more things came to mind
once admitted, make sure you take that copy of degree requirements and stick it in a safe deposit box. This is a contract between you and the school. Degree requirements change, and it is much easier to hit a static target than a moving one.

Second - you need to muster all the self-discipline you can once you start. For example, I was working full time at the time of pursuing my degree. I would be at the library in the evenings or reading. Sat and Sun from 8-noon were dedicated to writing. My family knew this was the time I was to be left alone. If I had something to do with one of my children at 9:00 am, then I would begin my writing at 4:30 so I could get the full 4 hours in. I might go as long as 6 or 6 1/2 hours, but typically would quit at noon - and then enjoy the rest of the weekend conscience free.

31. Excellent advice.
One more thing. If you think that your job is going to interfere, now would be the best time to start looking for something that wouldn't be so time consuming.

What is your master's in? I only ask because my master's and my Ph.D are in the same field, which made things quite a bit easier since I was also teaching high school and college full time.

41. I think I'll have a glass of Merlot tonight.
seriously, if you're not ready to commit 100% blood sweat and tears to a PhD program and demonstrate that to an admissions committee(s) (there were THREE different committees I had to clear with to get admission and fellowships) you will:

A. Not get in
B. on the off chance you DO get in, you will not get funding
C. on the slim off chance you do get in and get funding, you won't make it

It's not about intelligence, skills, talent. It's about blinding passion for your dissertation to the most neurotic and seemingly destructive degree. If you don't have it, your advisers will sense it.

Anyway best of luck to you.

I never had a 'blinding passion' for my dissertation. I wanted the end result, to be able to practice clinically.

My dissertation was just a small part of that quest.

I also only applied to one program, and I did not get any funding because of the school's pretty hefty endowment plus I worked full time while getting it.

I've worked most of my professional life surrounded by PhDs and with rare exception the only "passion" they had was to get a doctorate. Most used their dissertion topic as a springboard to work in related areas but few even mentioned it once they had been working in the field for a year or two because it was no longer relevant.

It is about intelligence, skills, talent and tenacity.

i was discussing it with some professionals and they think that i should try to not limit my options. especially if they could vastly improve in a year.

65. I'm in my second year in the MA program
and I'm thinking about that too. Deadline for applications is in January and this semester I have to produce a research project that, if I decide to apply, would be submitted in my application packet. I'm in really good with the faculty but my specialty (US History-post 1945, gender, sexuality) isn't well represented.

Both, BOTH post-1945 US people are on sabbatical/fellowship this year (how fucked up is that?) so I'm being "mentored" via email...:eyes:

Anyhoo...there are only 3 universities in NC that offer PhDs in US History...I'm at one of those schools now.

what to do? what to do? ...:scared:

72. Teensy piece of advice...
Psych PhD programs are very competitive. If you have your heart set on a PhD, maybe try for admittance to a few schools. :)

I say this because I applied to seven programs in my area and only received an offer at one. Granted, I am happy as hell there, but I never realized how much tougher it was to gain admittance into a PhD program than the Masters program.

This is a highly addictive site that I would check daily during those agonizing weeks of waiting to hear about my fate: http://thegradcafe.com/

Good luck!

74. Things must have really gotten competitive.
I applied to one program, the program that naturally followed my master's and got in. Didn't hurt that I didn't need tuition help, probably. I was working full time teaching high school and college.
