That darn Spell Check.
I was studying for a test next week. That's where most of my crazy ideas start. The teacher has our discussion board for the class set up where we study together by posting the meanings of four of the review terms each.
The person had tried to spell the word "analog." I added my 4 answers and then went back to copy their 4 answers over to the Works Word Processor document I had open for the purpose of studying. That's what we are supposed to do anyhow.
I saw the misspelling of the word, "analog" and right clicked for options to correct their misspelling. The very first thing it offered me was "anal log."
OMFG
I simply could not resist sharing that with my fellow Lounge Lizards. I shall now strip naked, like the crazed overworked college student that I am, and run around while I laugh uncontrollably. Will someone please bail me out of Dorothea Dix in the morning? Any takers?

7. Dorothea Dix was a person |
|
In the 1840s & 1850s she traveled throughout New England documenting the treatent of people with mental illness. At that time the mentally ill ended up in jails, prisons, locked up in the shed or rootceller never seeing the light of day, and worse. Their treatment was absolutely horrendus. She was at the forefront of what became a movement for the humane treatment of the mentally ill. In an age of sexism even worse than our own, she spoke to state legislatures and other public groups bringing this cause to light.
Many of the state psychiatric hospitals in this country were established because of her efforts. The hospital in Mississippi was established following a speech she gave to the state senate in 1852. Many state hospitals have facilities named for this courageous woman.
When the Civil war broke out, Lincoln apointed her the head of Army Nurses.
I used to work at the Mississippi State Hospital and was on a committee there to preserve the history of that institution. Now that I have gone back to school and am working on my Masters degree in history and government, I plan to do some more research and possibly use this topic for my thesis.

I know she was a person, but they named a state mental hospital here in NC, where I live, after her. It was notoriously brutal too. Wouldn't hurt to look into that part of it as well. Still, it was a joke.

that she helped get established. When these hospitals were first established they were models for humane treatment by standards of the time. I'm afraid that they do share a bad reputation through certain periods.
Interestingly, the Mississippi State hospital originally stood where the University of Mississippi Medical Center stands now on what was then the outskirts of Jackson. When the yankees marched on Jackson in 1863, the took the hospital, turned the patients out, and used the cupola for a artillery spotting post. The hospital then came under fire from the Confederate force along the ridge.
One of the documented conditionsthat D. Dix uncovered (no pun intended) was that of a "lunatic" who was chained in a pit who was thrown food and water. Remeniscent of a French Oubliet from the middle ages.
I didn't mean to sound offended at your joke... although I did misread the original post and thought you were doing research on this.

The movie of Grisham's A Time to Kill was partly filmed at Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield when I worked there. The Doctor's office tha Sandra Bullock broke into was actually where we held my departmental meetings.:boring:

Actually, I do drink Pepto-Bismol right out of the bottle. No one else in my family uses it and I'm constantly in a state of neurotic nausea, so I do practically drink it out of the bottle. It helps too. :P
