Are VCR's going obsolete?
I admit to having a DVD recorder now, so are VCR's on the way out now?

Even some of the "Big Box" stores only sell VCR/DVD combos, if even that.

1. Yes, they are getting harder and harder to find.
I bought one 2 years ago and they were already hard to find then. The only ones you could find were cheap and crappy too. I believe they are already being phased out.

2. I managed to get rid of the 100s of videotapes
I had collected by putting them in the "free" pile at a community garage sale. I could not sell them for even a nickel. And there wre hundreds of them - everything from unopened NatGeo documentaries to classics like Casablaca.

3. I've still got 6 or 7 tapes...
but no VCR in my apartment. Three machines that can play DVDs (my computer, my roommate's computer and my roommate's PS2), but nary a VHS player to be found. We used to have one, but it died and since we never used it, we never bothered to replace it.

4. I think that is a good bet
movie rental stores have VHS tapes only of older movies and kids stuff.

5. I still have a VCR...
In my bedroom.
But I think I probably will only use once in a great while.

(It's a 2 year old VCR/DVD player combo.
I'm mainly using it now, to transfer my old videotapes to DVD.

6. Depends....
That actually would depend on your purpose.

As more DVD-RW units come online, yes they will eventually be out of date as recording devices.

There parts can actually be quite useful, if in a limited way.

15. I think VCR's will still be around 10-20 years from now, like Beta machines still are.
Otherwise...

10. Funny story on record players
When my daughter was in kindergarten she came home all excited one day because her teacher played some music on a big black CD. She thought she had seen the future.

8. They're not going obsolete...
They are obsolete. Crazy how fast it happened really, the only place I find VCR's and VHS tapes are at the pawn shops and they're all dirt cheap.

14. DVRs are entirely worth it, IMO
I've still got a frightening number of tapes, and still record things to tape that I want hard copies of, but the DVR is the marvel of the age, and such a vast improvement over timeshifting with a VCR I can scarcely believe I ever got along without it.

Recording two different programs at the same time, setting automatic recordings for particular programs that catch the show no matter where it may move in the schedule, not having to worry about the tape cutting out-it's the only way to fly.

16. I had all my VHS tapes converted to DVD.
Mostly home videos of my childhood, etc.

So to answer your question, yes, they are being quickly phased out.

20. I used a company that specialized in restoring and preserving movies
Several years ago we had to convert all of our reel-to-reel film over to VHS and used the same service. Now, we had to transfer those VHS tapes over to DVD. In 2-3 years, we'll probably have to transfer those DVD's to either Blue-Ray or HD-DVD.

home video to DVD or mpg so that we will be able to transfer them to them next medium.
I do have a recently puchased tv with built in dvd and vhs players and the library is still about 50/50.

21. Thanks for the inspiration!
My accountant is on my back to come up with "non-cash charitable contributions" but I can never figure out what to donate. It'll be easy to donate a ton of old pre-recorded movies!

Yay!
Thanks!

:woohoo:

23. We don't even
have one hooked up in our main TV area/den - We have reinvested in DVD's and will probably never watch another VHS tape downstairs again.

The kids have VCR/DVD combos up in their rooms and they are the ones who still watch a VHS on occasion.

They are going away like 8 track players....

24. I possess one
I still have mine in my storage locker. All for two tapes I haven't yet watched. Larry's Hamlet and Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, which were a freebies. Maybe one day I'll feel adventurous and dig it out. though I'm afraid the picture quality may put me off.
