Actually the first photo was for a big blow-out Halloween party fifteen years ago. We went as Incubus and Succubus.

The second photo was the first shot taken with our new digital camera. It was also my first day of chemo therapy so I look a little whacked out. I just finished the chemo stuff yesterday and my hair is gone, but hopefully the cancer is too...

Today is the beginning of a new chapter in my life. Hoot!

So I don't look the same. The wife looks even better though :)

I am in and out tonight, trying to make some damned clam chowder for the wife and she is in bed. She makes the best ever, so I am trying to make something good for her. Onions, celery, salt and pepper, Monterey jack cheese, clams, milk, and a mix of Parmesan and Romano cheese.

I could go on and on about the research... but the short answer: I'm studying how landscape (and especially human modification -- agriculture, urban sprawl, etc) affects salamander populations. You can get an idea of how isolated populations are by looking at the DNA, so i've done a bunch of fieldwork and a bunch of labwork. And now i'm doing a bunch of sitting at my computer. ;-)

Anyway, i'm happy to tell you more about it but i try not to bore people, hehe! :hi:

Here's a pic i just found online -- this is the kind of salamander i work with. Marbled salamander, or Ambystoma opacum if you want to be a nerd. :-)

I think they're pretty much the cutest things ever!!

I think they are considered threatened in Ohio, but we are at the very northern edge of their range. They are much more common in the southeastern US. Most related salamanders will be similar in terms of how they're impacted by habitat loss... so all told it's better to work with ones that aren't endangered if possible. Of course I'd rather leave the rare ones alone, and getting permits to work on them is also a huge pain!

111. I can totally understand what you are doing....

We had a stream next to our house that ran to the lake a block below me....
When I was little we used to go and catch salamanders, newts,frogs and other assorted stream creatures.... Then they built houses in the woods where the stream ran through and they stopped it up.... now there is a gully at the edge of my yard...
with no more living creatures or water........
so good for you.....

I heard this theme over and over while i was doing my fieldwork. It makes me so sad. Someday there will just be little squares of preserved "wildlands" in a sea of humanity, and we'll have to take our kids there like it's a zoo... :cry:
