Ever since I started looking up info online about taking a gap year between highschool and college, I've been getting all these spam emails trying to tell me that if I just join their program, I'll become happier, more confident, and all the other wonderful side-effects of giving lots of your money to strangers. Emails full of images that are so goddamn cheery that they can't possibly be true.

I think the most annoying and pretentious claim of all, though, is that this will help me "find myself." People find themselves on their own individual journeys, not by buying pre-packaged experiences. Seems to me that all these gap-year progams trying to sell self-discovery are just taking advantage of people's uncertainty. Keep your pseudo-inspirational phrases to yourselves, guys; I'm not buying what you're selling.
