Game 4: Diamondbacks vs. Rockies: The OFFICIAL game thread!
Alright folks, here it is: Game 4 of the National league Championship Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the red-hot Colorado Rockies. Colorado leads the series 3 games to none, and a win tonight would propel the Rockies to their first-ever appearance in the World Series!

The weather in Denver is cool tonight, but it's dry - a far cry from last night's rain and drizzle-drenched affair.

Rookie pitcher Franklin Morales will pitch for the Rockies tonight as Colorado looks to win its 21st game in its last 22 attempts.

LET'S GO ROCKIES!!! *clap clap clap-clap-clap* LET'S GO ROCKIES!!! *clap clap clap-clap-clap*

I hear that it's about 50 in Denver at the moment - certainly a little nicer than last night!

9. I think they just caught the wrong team at the wrong time.
The Rockies are hotter right now and any playoff team has ever been. They're like a steamroller, and the Diamondbacks can't seem to get out of the way in this series. We can only hope that if the Rockies have a long layoff before potentially going to the World Series they'll stay just as hot.

GO ROCKIES!!!

Now I guess I have to watch the rest of the game... hopefully there won't be any more hits and I'll get to hit the sack soon.

Edit: the only problem with hitting a 3-run homer is that there are no runners on for the next guy :)

Edited on Mon Oct-15-07 11:33 PM by jtg33
Right across Central Park from the state capitol, and surrounded by thousands of fans. I had to wait four hours for the rally to start, and I got myself a decent sunburn, but it was SOOO worth it.

That was a great summer. I had just graduated from high school, and a little more than a week later, the Avs were hoisting the Stanley Cup.

That is just beyond words. NOBODY does that, especially not in a team's first-ever League Championship Series.

38. so
if the Rockies clinch tonight, and the ALCS goes seven games, do you think that helps the Rockies, or hurts them? It'd kind of a long wait until game 1 of the WS.

43. I thought the 4 days off between the end of the NLDS and the start of the NLCS would hurt.
So much for that theory.

I think the time off will make the Rockies a little sluggish, but from what they've been showing lately, they'd STILL find a way to win. It could be the ugliest game in the history of baseball, and the Rox would STILL some out on top.

Right now, it kind of looks like the only thing that could stop the Rockies would be if the Red Sox/Indians sent Superman to the mound for Game 1 of the Series... And even then, the Rockies would probably only lose by two runs.

45. Hard to say
If they win tonight, they've got eight days before the Series starts. That'd help guys rest up, heal the wounds of a long season, etc. If they don't start strong in the Series, everybody'll say the long layoff put some rust on 'em, but I think pro ballplayers know how to keep from getting rusty.

The mental/emotional part's harder to gauge, though — you're on a streak, you want to get right to the next game. Set 'em up, knock 'em down.

61. It's just something I noticed two years in a row.
In 2002, the Giants were 5 outs away from winning Game 6 of the World Series against the Angels and taking the title. The announcers made a point, and the Giants promptly went on to blow Game 6 and lose Game 7 to the Angels.

Fast forward to 2003, Game 5 of the NLCS. The Cubs were leading the series 3-1, and they were 5 outs away from going to their first World Series since the 1940's. The announcers said that they were 5 outs away, and a couple pitches later was the infamous foul down the left field line at Wrigley Field where Moises Alou and life-long Cubs fan Steve Bartman met. Bartman tipped the ball, Alou couldn't make the out, and the Cubs promptly collapsed. The Marlins went on to win the game and the series.

Since I noticed that bizarre coincidence, I've decided that the "5 outs to go" call is cursed.

78. I can't believe it either.
This whole time I've been thinking, "if we win, they're going to play a World Series game in Colorado... how will the universe handle that?"

:)

Oh, and Byrnes ends the series face down by first base in defeat. In your face.

82. How's THAT for luck, Byrnes?
Luck my ass. The Rockies were better when they needed to be. They might not have outplayed the Diamondbacks in every single inning, but they certainly outplayed the Diamondbacks - at the plate, in the field, and on the mound.

That's not luck; that's just plain good.

79. Some of their fans were just pretty horseshit
Booing when the dude said "I want to congratulate the Arizona Diamondbacks."

I know they're new at this "winning" thing, but that was bad form.

80. I agree, but that seems to happen every single time a team wins something big.
In every single sport, it seems to happen - somebody rightfully congratulates the opponents, and the fans invariably boo. I agree that's it's in poor taste and bad form, but it has been happening for a long time, and I don't think it's going to stop any time soon.

81. No, we cheered the Devils after the Avs beat them in 2001
Never boo the losing side after you've won.

That only flies in Philly.

I was very disappointed in the Rockies fans.

83. I'm not
When the team leader of the other side goes before the press with the whole "they're just lucky thing" he sounds like a whiny kid. He deserves to get booed.

85. He should have been booed, as he was, at every at-bat.
However, when the game, and series has been won, it's low class to boo your opposing team.
