I spent the morning picking pecans with two little kids age 2 and 4, they had the best time. |
|
This was their first time to even see a pecan, I think they picked up every pecan in the yard.
We had storm and a lot of rain this afternoon so they have even more to pick now.

I'm going to have a good crop on our old trees this year, but they aren't ready until mid November (SE Arizona)

2. Some are ready, some are still a little green. |
|
I spread them out of newspaper on the big table in back room.
I have really old pecan tree, over hundred years old, and two more about 40 or 50 years old.
This looks like a good year for pecans.
I don't like pecans but I like to pick them.

3. Our trees are at least 50 or 60 years old - not sure when they were planted |

maybe even in the 30's.
Sell your pecans! I saw shelled pieces (also known as floor sweepings) for $9/lb yesterday!
I love them fresh and in pies!

usually don't start to fall until the first week of November, but I've picked up quite a few already. I am really surprised to have any at all. We had a late, hard freeze just after they had tassled out and it just turned them brown and crispy overnight. Luckily, it put out some more tassles after the freeze.
I took some to my son and daughter-in-law the other day. Her parents are here on a visit from Vietnam and have never seen pecans before. I'll have to make them a pecan pie the next time I go over.
