Need help from some DU women - composing a letter to a guy
from a feminine point of view - one gentle aristocratic woman to an eligible aristocratic man.

This is for a role-playing game (Dungeons & Dragons) set in the medieval era... so, email/photographs/telephone is not available.

I'm looking for something where the woman had met said eligible aristocrat at a recent festival/party/ball event and wants to subtly express interest in him, but also not seem too forward.

What sort of wordings should I use?

Thanks

2. lol
I don't think that would be very subtle... I've seen women on DU mention it when a southern woman says something and they'll say, "that's a big insult coming from a southern woman" when somebody up here in the northeast wouldn't even consider it mildly offensive.

8. Probably not, but
If said guy was wealthy, attractive and eligible, you never know.

4. A way to sidestep it...
...is to adopt Regency standards of behavior, in which the eligible youngsters aren't allowed to write at all. Either may address a letter to the other's relatives if acquainted, inquiring subtly (but rarely directly) about the health/status of the Significant Other. That's subtle, and can be delicious, as in Jane Austen.

How about sharing your eventual letter over in the Gaming forum?

10. I'll do that
the PCs are going to have to try to find this guy - who went missing soon after his brother, the duke, was assassinated.

Eventually, the PCs will discover a cache of "love letters" from various women around the kingdom who have expressed interest in said guy, who is something of a playboy and has long evaded marriage, despite being an attractive and eligible bachelor...

6. Dear Sir Gregory
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 09:52 AM by skygazer
Forgive my shocking forwardness in corresponding, but I seem to have misplaced something and suspect it was during my sojourn at the Wardley Village Fool's Festival where I had the honor of making your acquaintance. I wondered if perhaps you had seen it - your rugged masculinity hints of the sort of observation skills acquired during a lifetime of aristocratic pursuits.

I speak, my dear Sir Gregory, of my heart which, skipping a beat when I laid eyes upon your manly loins, seems to have leapt out of my body like a pheasant on the wing. Should you have knowledge of this item, I would be obliged if you would see fit to return it. My husband, Lord Miggleston, will be in London this Wednesday next, and I have instructed the servants to ignore your ascent up the ivy and onto my balcony. My apartments are in the east wing of the Manor and a lantern will be lit.

I await your reply with trembling anticipation.

Cordially,

Lady Katherine "Hubba Hubba" Miggleston

9. You didn't use the word 'loins'...
*tsk*

Nice note tho... I imagine I'd find myself climbing some latticework if I received it.

13. If you don't want to seem too forward...
the letter should just be an invitation to yet another festival/ball/hunting party/what have you, and then the moves can be put on the aristocrat in person. This has the added advantage, in character, of not leaving a paper trail of your interest behind, for use by your political enemies. Out of character, it gives the DM the opportunity to set up a new advanture -- What terrible fiends will lurk in the woods when the hunting party sets off after the stag/fox/etc? Only time will tell!

14. good idea
I like the invitation idea, since I could fit it into the story fairly well...

The storyline I was partially borrowing basically describes the missing person's study as having "love letters" from various women around the kingdom over the years. The missing guy, who is now in line to be the duke, had a love in his youth, but she died during childbirth and he swore to never love again... but, he has dallied with women here & there over the years, but has never come close to any serious romance.

And, the backstory for one of the PCs is that he is the 4th son of a minor noble trying to impress his father, and my idea was to have one of those letters be from one of his sisters.

15. D&D!
My Dearest X,

I was enchanted by our last meeting. I've never been inspired to dance, but after your gentle guidance, I find myself wanting to venture onto the dance floor once more! How skilled you were - like a prancing lion. I want to express my blushing gratitude at having met such a fine dance partner. It was an evening I will never forget.

With utmost appreciation,

X Chick.

or something like that... :)

combine that with the invitation idea from SteppingRazor, and I could be on to something.

17. She would not have written directly
to express interest, but would have written him within the context of the story if it demanded that she warn him of someone else's bad intentions, provide info or news about another character that the male character needs. That way she is then free to tag on ".... given all this, I am most concerned about your precarious situation." Or some words to that effect. Guys love it when they know we're worrying about them doing something potentially dangerous. ;-)
