Bitter basil?
I purchased organic basil at Trader Joe's and used it with heirloom tomatoes, shaved parmesan and a few spritzes from a vinaigrette dressing. It was really bitter. I have done this salad before (though with regular on the vine tomatoes).

Why would basil leaves taste so bitter?
