36. No cheating, huh?
OK- I can't e-mail these to my brother. Damn!

All I know is the third one has that *&^%^& horizontal
stabilizer that was largely responsible for a fatal crash of
Alaska Airlines flight 261 from Puerto Vallarta to SF,
Jan. 31, 2000.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0001/31/bn.03.html

They are aerodynamically unsound as hell.
Even a laywomen like myself can see that.

----end of rant----------

Notice Alaska Air doesn't have them anymore?

37. Alaska
Yes Alaska is getting rid of their MD-80's and 83's
and should be rid of them by next year hopefully
They are replacing them with 737-700/800/900 aircraft

It was the elevator on the tail of one of their MD-80's that malfunctioned and it did go down.

48. Actually, the elevator on the MD-80 didn't malfunction.
What happened was that the jackscrew that moves the horizontal stabilizer (not the elevator) in response to electric pitch trim inputs malfunctioned, because the airline had obtained authorization from the FAA to extend the period between inspections to much longer than the manufacturer's recommendation. In addition, they used an unauthorized material to lubricate the jackscrew. The ultimate result was that the threads on the jackscrew stripped, causing the horizontal stabilizer to go almost vertical. This was the only known accident involving the jackscrew on the DC-9/MD-80 airplanes, thousands of which have been in service since 1965. It is actually a very safe mechanism.

39. Without looking at the replies or using the Google...
The first one looks like either an Airbus 319/320 or a Boeing 727.

The second one I believe is a new Airbus 380

The third one... I'm not sure. It's not an L1011, and it's not made by Boeing.

The fourth one is a Boeing 747.

And the fifth one is a Lockheed L1011

How did I do?

44. I know they've been answered, but here is waht I though
Alaska: 737-700 (the short version of the updated 737)
Emirates: A380--although I didn't know any were flying with any airlines yet.
CP Air: 727-100, a rarity--they didn't make many of -100 version before moving into the -200.
Qantas:747-200. No winglets, it ain't a -400!
Delta L-1011--I personally like the L-1011, especially the "bay of bathrooms" at the rear of the cabin. Despite being a Douglas fan, it's a shame the DC-10 killed the L-1011--and then MacDac as well.

Hell, the fall out from McDonnel Douglas' implosion is STILL straining Boeing.
