I brought home a Boston Terrier from animal control today. He has been somewhat snorty and snotty and has hacked and sneezed some too. He was neutered Friday but I doubt being post surgical really has anything to do with it. I had a Boston Terrier when I was a kid and know they can be stuffy with their noses but I don't remember it being like this. It's not pronounced but just enough to let me know it is there. I am just afraid he is bringing something for my other dog and cat to catch. Anyone had a dog with something like this? I would call the vet but they are closed so I thought I would ask you guys.

IOW, a doggie cold. Yes, it's contagious. No, it's rarely deadly. Yes, have the dog checked by a vet, which you should do anyway for a new doggie

It's hard to diagnose this over the internet, but it would certainly be my best guess. I believe it is contageous, but I don't think it is fatal in very many cases. I volunteered for two years at an animal shelter and only saw one dog die from this.
P.S. You are a very kind person to give this dog a second chance.

4. upper respiratory infections are very common in shelters |
|
Kennel cough is another possibility. The vet probably will be able to tell the difference. He can be vaccinated for kennel cough along with his other vaccinations; kennel cough sounds like a hoarse cough and eventually clears up and an upper respiratory infection is more just about discharge, runny nose and eyes.

5. This is not kennel cough |

Bostons, due to their breeding to get that cute, short snout have breathing problems which manifest itself in this way. They gasp and do something called a "reverse sneeze" There is nothing wrong with the little guy.
He is not contagious - unless he is showing other symptoms, i.e. runny bowel movements, oozing eyes.
Give him lots of hugs and make him feel loved.
They are wonderful (stubborn) dogs!
Bless you for bringing him home.

6. I am used to reverse breathing. |

I have a basset that does it too. This dog has snot dripping out his nose - it got worse as the night went on, gagging, hacking. Anyway, he is going to the vet this morning.
