so i went out to dinner tonight and had jellyfish. |
|
this new place opened up down the street from my house and we decided to check it out, i got thai rice noodles and some chicken curry and my daughter got some kind of thai noodles and lemon chicken and we ordered a "Po Po platter" so everything comes out and it's really good until the "Po Po platter" hit the table. The waitress brings the plate over and in the middle is a pile of something, i'm thinking wow thats a ton of pickled ginger so i take my chop sticks and grab some and put it on mouth, not pickled ginger, not even close. Also on the plate was some duck, boneless pork, some sort of poultry that was steamed (not delicious) but clearly the jellyfish was the star of the show. I'm glad i didn't know what it was before i ate because i would not have touched it so now i've tried and i now know i never want jellyfish again, i've had 4 altoids and i brushed my teeth but i cannot get the taste to go away and i keep thinking about the texture. Imo the texture in the preparation i had is what made it awful.

1. Wow... that sounds really horrible. |
|
I like chewy rubbery food though so I imagine I might not have the same reaction.
Love your avatar. :)

3. i dunno, this texture was unlike anything i've ever eaten and i've had |
|
lots of different foods, the whole experience was just unpleasant. Now my daughter will eat anything, sometimes she'll some little known sea creature and say "Could you eat that?" even she didn't like it, she tried it with sauce, without and then with the super hot red sauce and she couldn't stand the texture. Maybe fried in bacon grease, or maybe dipped in batter and then deep fried.
I love Master shake, he's such an asshole.

Now I'm curious! I like octopus tentacle, chicken gizzards... so I'm pretty fond of the chewy gristly stuff.

my 10 year old won't eat hardly anything. Argh, it's maddening.
Was she always fond of trying new things, or is this a recent development?

11. she's always been pretty easy to please and way adventurous, my husband travels alot |
|
especially to China and to Prague and he eats the real deal all the time and he's been instrumental in her trying new foods. When she was little we always took her out to eat and by the time she was 6 she was ordering off the adult menus, one of the reasons is because i want her to be able to go out without us and enjoy her experience you know, napkin on your lap, please and thank you and that kind of thing. She will eat things i won't, i'm trying to expand my horizons a bit. We also have a rule---do not say "I don't like that" if you've haven't tried it at least twice. I'll give jellyfish another chance at a different place.

4. you know whats funny, when the waitress came back i asked her if she could please |
|
tell what it was and she didn't know so she went to the kitchen and they told and she said "It's jellyfish, normally you would find that in Japanese cooking".
The people at the next table got the fish, the one where they fry head on and they went to town on that dishm it looked and smelled really good, next time i'm trying that.

hmmmm....
Yeah, the texture thing would've grossed me out, too.
Maybe you should have some more Altoids. They're curiously strong, you know. :D

I have a friend who is absolutely and completely grossed out by the texture of bananas. She refuses to eat them. In fact, she doesn't like the texture of most fruits, strangely enough....and bananas are the worst, in her opinion.
To each, their own.
Maybe you should get some therapy to deal with the traumatic memory of the jellyfish texture. It sounds like you've got some PTSD goin' on there. :D

30. I've had some pretty good jellyfish in Chinatown |
|
It didn't wobble. It was gelatinous, but it was like a very stiff gelatin. It had a snap to it.
