Does your body seem to *want* to sit at a certain weight? |
|
Mine seems to be very set on staying exactly where it's at; which is fine, but seemingly odd in its consistency.
Every weekend, I totally pig out, and then for about three or four days afterward I have NO appetite. If I skip the pig out and just eat *normally* all week, it has the same effect on my weight as if I oink for a couple days, then lose my appetite; my weight stays exactly the same.
I don't see it as necessarily a good or bad thing- just weirdly consistent.
Anyone feel like their body foremost controls their habits, rather than the opposite?

3. My body wants to be the size of a bus. |

I swear, my ass WANTS to be as wide as a VW--there is just no talking it out of the idea. I want to send my ass to boarding school or at least to live with its Aunt for a while...
Sorry. I'm not making fun of you, Lara.
I do think that everybody has a weight that is "natural" for them, assuming they follow proper nutritional habits. If all you do is pig out on food that is bad for you, or even just have eating patterns that are not suited to your body, then you will weigh more than you should. I also think it is possible to be underweight--in spite of what your doctors might tell you.

I can empathize, truly. When I was heavier after having babies but before dumping the baby weight, my body seemed to have several points at which it liked to sit. It was definitely an effort to convince it otherwise. I wasn't real happy with those particular set-points.

8. I have stayed between 135 to 145 pounds for the last 15 years. |
|
No amount of working-out, protein shakes, and eating until I wanted to explode has changed anything. 5' 11.75" and 140 pounds is what my body seems to want.

From age fourteen on, I was always either gaining weight, or intentionally losing weight. I could never buy a dress for a special occasion months ahead of time, because I had no idea what size I would be that far in the future.
Then in my fifties, I decided to stop dieting. Of course, I gained weight for a while because I had dieted for the previous year, but after that, I've been the same size for seven years. Most people would find nothing remarkable about that, but for me it is astonishing!
So, yes, I do think there is a weight your body wants to be, and it will fight you tooth and nail to get there.

I've mentioned before that I have had issues with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating in the past. My weight has varied WIDELY when that was active but since I've gotten beyond that my body weight has gotten back to almost exactly where it was before I had an eating disorder and has remained that give or take 5-10 lbs depending on time of year. The best thing, for me anyway, was giving up my obsession with the numbers on a scale. I very seldom weigh myself and sometimes at the doctor's office I look away and ask them to not tell me other than whether it is stable. I can tell my weight varies by the way my clothes fit but there is definitely a 10 lb range that my body prefers.

Yes, I think this is called a plateau...
I've hit several during the time I was trying actively to lose weight...
And it's really difficult to get off that damned place!
It can be done, of course...
However, I don't feel as though my body controls my habits...
But that's just me!
