What will you be handing out to trick or treaters? |
|
I found a good sale and have some coupons, so we're splurging on Snickers and Milky Ways. I just have to hide them from my husband until then.

Halloween on our street is unreal--hundreds and hundreds of kids. We learned the hard way last year NOT to run out of candy. Nobody "tricks" if you don't fork over the treats, but they just DO. NOT. STOP. KNOCKING. Door closed--knock knock. Porch light out--knock knock. Living room lights out--knock knock. Sign on door that says "we are out of candy"--knock knock and the repeated sound of "Mommy, what does this sign say?"
Sigh. So this year we take out a home equity loan and stock up on more candy than is sensible for one household to purchase. It's more honorable than hiding under the bed.

It was such fun. We got more than 400 kids a night. I miss that. I won't be buying any Halloween candy this year.

13. Well, it's different, that's for sure |

It's hard to explain--we live on a main street in a small village, in a county made up mainly of small towns and villages, and yet this village is the ONLY one in the area (and I've lived in a few and spend time/shop/visit friends in many more) where everyone is scary-friendly. The kids are all well behaved. The teens are all polite to their elders and talk in complete sentences. There is no crime to speak of. We've lived here two years and I CAN'T GET USED TO IT! It's Stepford, I swear to gods.
I do suspect some busing for Halloween, and yet nobody gets crabby. Nobody hides so they don't have to give out candy. The kids all WAIT IN LINE, patiently, at each house for their turn at getting candy. The neighbors sit out on their porches or on their lawns around chimineas and make a party of it because there's no point in closing the front door--you're only gonna open it a nanosecond later, over and over again for hours.
I'm just waiting for the day somebody rips off their mask and I get to see the circuitry...

I live high in the sky in a secured building. We bought tons of candy and we're eating it all ourselves.

I had a bowl of what we used to consider "good stuff": Mini chocolate bars, smarties, the bubblegum with so much sugar that it makes your teeth hurt...
And a bowl of apples, just so the parents couldn't TOTALLY hate me.
When offered both bowls, HALF the kids took an apple.
WTF is WRONG with these kids today?

Weather permitting, I set up the telescope and treat the kiddies to views of the cosmos.
And hand out Milky Way and Mars bars, of course.

I live on a University campus in the Middle east, and since it is an American University with some Americans scattered here and there, we have Halloween for the kids. Every year it's the same thing, kids new to the University and the Halloween concept see other kids going around and getting candy, and they think trick or treating is a good idea. So they throw on a quick costume and join the fun. My first couple of years here, we had a list of houses and kids participating, but we ended up with at least twice as many kids coming around for candy. This year there is no list, but I'm getting tons of candy.
I'm not always happy to see the Americanization of foreign culture, but I'm glad my American expat daughters get a real Halloween.
