Today's College Football Thread
There is a great slate of games today, with at least one or two interesting games on in each time slot. The best early game is probably #7 West Virginia at Rutgers (who just last week knocked off then-#2 South Florida).

The afternoon time slot has three games between top 25 teams: In the Pac 10, Oregon hosts USC (when was the last time USC went into a game as an underdog?). In the Big East, we have perhaps the most improbably matchup of top 20 teams in history, as South Florida plays at Connecticut. In the SEC we have one of college football’s greatest rivalries, between Georgia and Florida.

In prime time, #1 Ohio State has what should be their toughest test yet on the road against Penn State, and Texas A&M (who, despite all the heat on head coach Dennis Franchione, are 6-2 this year) hosts undefeated Kansas. (Incidentally, next week A&M travels to Norman to play my Sooners, who have the week off this week.)

There’s even good late-night football tonight: undefeated Arizona State hosts former #2 California.

What game(s) will you be watching?

2. he was selling an "inside information" newsletter to top boosters
for a $1200 fee. The inside information included injury report information on key players, among other things. From what I understand, the university administration "reprimanded" Franchione and said it would be a factor in any decision on whether or not to retain him after the season, but they haven't yet taken further action. They also "self-reported" to the NCAA, which is investigating further, I think ...

16. how bad is notre dame?
they are so bad that if they doubled their scoring output, they would still rank 108th out of 119 FBS schools :wow: The domers have only scored 80 points this year, and 21 of those were defensive/special teams touchdowns.

they are so bad that their average yards per rush--1.09--is almost 25% less than the lowest y/r of the century (2001 Arizona: 1.46)

I got most of these stats from a slate article about Charlie Weis (called "the worst football coach in the universe"): http://www.slate.com/id/2176634/

I'm sure the fans are happy to have the week off :)

23. how do you think it will turn out?
I can't get a read on tOSU this year--I saw the first quarter of last week's game, when they looked thoroughly dominant, and then flipped back just in time to see MSU score two defensive touchdowns in a span of about 30 seconds (and they almost got a third). To paraphrase Herbstreit, they seem to have a BCS defense, but an FCS offense.

So what are your thoughts on the game tonight?

36. Okay I am embarassed I got it all wrong
The Gold Bowl is between Union and Bowie State not Va. State.
http://www.bsubulldogs.com/News/football/2007/10/20/Va_Union.asp

There was an article in the Richmond paper about it being the last but I can't remember why and our paper is so slack that it doesn't register on a google news search (how pathetic is that?)

State and Union is a big deal though. A former co-worker was one of a few State alums and if Union won in football or basketball (they usually did that) every Union alum came by her office to remind her. She reciprocated when State won.

But then that interception happened, and whoa baby! GAME!

UH has an out if they run the table but don't crack the BCS top 12 (due to horrendous SoS): if they're in the top 16, and one of the 6 BCS conference champions is below them, they're in. And as of this moment, UConn is in charge in the Big East!! :bounce:

70. It's not easy being a Michigan State fan - 4-17 in last 21 conference games
A three point loss at Wisconsin, one point loss in OT to Northwestern, blowing a two-touchdown lead today and losing in double OT to Iowa - it's just another typical season. They won't win again this year.

Thank God for Tom Izzo and the basketball team. They are going to be really good, maybe better than really good. Go Green!

Even if they win all of their remaining games, there will be teams with just 1 loss and possibly none ahead of them, but it would be a satisfying year.

Just in case I haven't made my case known: Fire Fran! Fucking overrated hack coach.

UCLA hadn't lost one, so it was a great win for the Cougs.

106. Just home from the game!
For some reason my Cougs seem to play UCLA tough recently, winning something like six of the last seven meetings.

Ninety-eight offensive plays, 273 rushing yards, 271 passing! It was also great to see the defensive front seven get more aggressive as the coaches have been hesitant this season to call blitzes given our youth and inexperience at secondary.

Great sunny weather, even if it may have been a little on the cool side for our visitors from so-cal.

Home sweet home for five years:
