Some things you already know, plus a few eye-openers ("Anytime you transfer underwear from the washer to the dryer, you’re going to get E. coli on your hands").

Enjoy:

1. Don't sweat it.
We have immune systems because we're not expected to live in sterile environments. You won't get E.Coli poisoning from picking up your pants.

7. Exactly....
People freak for no reason. Isn't this the same website that brought us the foods that are probably killing you or something?

4. Judging from that article, it's a wonder anybody's still alive
A germ phobic person could become paralyzed with fear from reading that.

I use common sense. I do not touch my face or eat unless I've washed my hands, nor do I use a kitchen sponge. (My one unenvironmental habit is paper towels.)

Other than that, I'd hate to see a kid whose parents insisted on wiping down everything he or she touched. Aside from the fact that such a kid would turn out like "Monk," kids gain immunity by being exposed to the less harmful germs.

So do teachers, evidently. Some friends of mine went on a trip to China soon after it was opened to U.S. tourism. At that time, it was practically a given that tourists would come down with bad respiratory infections in China (I certainly did in 1990). Anyway, in that particular tour group of 20, 18 people came down with whopping respiratory infections. The two who didn't were retired elementary school teachers, who had evidently gained immunity during forty years of dealing with six-year-olds.

8. My dentist is germ phobic...
...I was talking with him the other day and he told me that the first thing he does when walking into a public rest room is grab a handful of paper towels so he doesn't have to touch anything. He also said that he's passed these traits on to his kids and they're worse than he is. They'll yell "DON'T TOUCH THAT, DAD!" when he's about to touch just about anything.

9. In a related story. . .
I read an item recently, sorry can't recall the specifics, about a tour guide who hauls groups of Americans all over the world. He talked about how each group has people who constantly sanitize themselves, never go near a local, and bring along water and even all their food from home. Guess which people almost invariably get sick on these trips? Come on, guess!

I agree 200% with billyskank. . . we have immune systems and should know how to use them. If we all become boys in bubbles, where will that leave us?

10. And the secret to preventing digestive upsets in China was
Edited on Sat Oct-27-07 07:14 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
drinking lots of beer.

The one person in my group who didn't drink the delicious local beers was also the only one who got digestive problems.
