Just found out that my grandfather died today. It hasn't really sunk in yet. He was a funny, quirky, kind man... a WWII vet... told my grandmother that she was beautiful and he loved her every day. I just keep thinking of a French expression i read once -- roughly translated it means, "when an old man dies, it is as though a library has burned."
I'm sort of a mess... and very, very worried about grandma. I just don't know what she'll do... anyway, just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.

one step in front of the other...
a library may have burned, but copies were made in people's hearts...

"Quand un vieillard meurt, c'est une bibliothèque qui brûle."
The literal transition is "When an old man dies, it's a library that burns." I think it may be a proverb... but i don't know the origin. When i googled it just now some of the websites referenced a "vieux africain" which is an old African instead of just old man. So maybe it's an African proverb originally?
Anyway, thanks for your well wishes -- it means a lot.

That French expression is very true. Are you far away from your family?

My grandparents are in western KY, so it's about a 6.5 hr drive from Columbus. My parents are in Boston (where i grew up)... so we're all converging, but the sad thing is my sister is in Turkey on business for the next week. So she won't make it home -- i'm sure that will be hard on her.

DU has provided some much-needed distraction tonight!
You guys are all so wonderful. I'm feeling a little better now -- feeling lucky that i got to have had him around this long, you know? After all, i'm 27 now, which -- while not OLD -- is pretty old to still have grandparents around! I still have my grandma (his wife) and a grandfather on my dad's side. So overall i'm a lucky girl, even though he'll be much missed.
Anyway, i'll get back to planning our trip to Florida. ;-) :loveya:
