So finally, a medical, uh, difficulty that you don't have to send white light, prayers, best wishes, sympathies, etc., over. Just a little "awwww," maybe. It's starting to appear that, along with the lactose intolerance, I also suffer from a sensitivity to wheat. It's not very pronounced, and it's not anything serious or potentially life-threatening like celiac sprue. Just a sensitivity to some component of wheat, seemingly not the gluten, or at least I had a Boca burger (no bun) which has gluten, but didn't cause me problems. Detailing what the problems are would violate the Lounge's prohibition on discussion of bodily functions. In a nutshell, as with the lactose intolerance, I tend to have to know where a bathroom is at all times, but there's no Lactaid equivalent for wheat.
So, I have to give up spaghetti. And egg noodles. And wheat bread. And bran flakes. And every other kind of pasta, or at least every kind I've eaten to date. Pizza baby. Basically about half my diet up in smoke. So gimme an awwwww, please. Nothing serious; nothing bad. Just sort of a "darn it" kind of situation.
On the brighter side, some writers indicate that wheat sensitivity can be a factor in depression, and indeed I feel a good deal more chipper since cutting out wheat. If you, like me, suffer from an intransigent anxiety disorder, you might want to try quitting wheat. I've already learned that brown rice and soft corn tortillas are delicious, filling, and cheap. When we figure out how to make wheat-free peach cobbler, I'll be sure to let everybody know. Maybe with oatmeal...
