2. Bocephus is proof that talent skips a generation
"Well, I've been hanging out with my rebel son Kid Rock
And I really don't like this stuff they call hip-hop
But he's sure been good to me and I'm still trying to make him see
In country music, you just can't say the 'F' word"

- Hank Williams Jr (:puke:)

"Just so you know, so it's set in stone,
Kid Rock don't come from where I come from:
Yeah, it's true, he's a Yank, he ain't no son of Hank:
If you even thought so, god-damn, you're fucking dumb."

- Hank III (:headbang:)

3. Assuming "we" means "isolationist , eduphobic, neo-caucasian racists", he's probably correct.
Funny enough though: the fact that "we" meant
"isolationist , eduphobic, neo-caucasian racists"
150 years ago is a major reason why the South didn't win. :silly:

HW Jr is a waste of perfectly good oxygen, not to mention alcohol.

You could have put a microphone in a men's room, fed Johnny Cash
two pounds of bad fish, and recorded an hour of audio with more
intelligence and genuine artistic vision than any album HW Jr ever released.

"He has the self-assured smirk of a 'glory hole regular' with a mouthful of freshly felched semen."

Gross, but oh-so-descriptive.

Another one, from Rome, The TV Series:

"...a piss-drinking son of a circus whore."

37. You know, I generally shit all over the South whenever possible, it's a hobby of mine, but...
the North was much more isolationist than the South in the era leading up to the Civil War (or Great Patriotic Beat-down of Southern Traitors, if you prefer). One of their major gripes was that the industrializing North wanted protectionist trade policies which was bad for the South's economy of selling natural resources and importing finished good.

Was the South not more interested in foreign trade at the time than the North, which was protecting its 'still in the infancy stage' industries.

The loss of their labor assets which would've crippled their plantations is what they were afraid of.

74. Oh, that's absolutely right. Slavery was the main issue, definitely
But on the matter of forreign affairs, the South was more outwardly focused than the North would be. It is only after WWI, that US (i.e. Northern) industry felt comfortable with the idea of participation in the world rather than an closed domestic market.

29. Hank Sr also wrote a huge amount of songs asking forgiveness for his misdeeds
he knew he was no angel and his songs show that...'cheatin heart' was just one song of mnay

With tears in my eyes, dear, I begged you to stay
You couldn’t forgive me, so you went away
I made a mistake, dear, by tellin’ you lies
Now I lay awake, dear, with tears in my eye

No more to be sweetheart, no more to be friend
Please give me a chance, dear, and I’ll make amends
My yesterdays haunt me, my weary heart cries
I just can’t go on, dear, with tears in my eyes

11. There's no way the South could have ever WON the Civil War.
The North never even entered into "total war" the way the South did.

The North may have allowed, after a time, secession.

But there is no fucking way the ConFeds could have ever defeated the Union.

67. It's hard to say
Could the Confederate States of America have achieved their major strategic goal, identified as causing the Unites States of America to recognize their independence and cease occupying military installations at strategic points such as Charleston Harbor (Fort Sumter) and Pensacola Bay (Fort Pickens)?

Yes, and there are perhaps several ways to have achieved their aims.

1. Prevent the occupation of Fort Sumter by United States troops. Fort Sumter was not occupied by anyone when South Carolina seceded, only a small garrison of troops were around and they were charged with maintenance of all of the forts in Charleston. They were originally in a fort on the mainland and agreed to remain at the fort until the situation was resolved, South Carolina in return vowed not to occupy Fort Sumter. Their commander decided to renege on that deal and occupied Fort Sumter under cover of darkness. South Carolina could have reneged first and occupied the fort, preventing the Firing of Fort Sumter from ever taking place. (Allowing a longer period of diplomacy)

2. Destroy the supply ships to Fort Sumter, then make it look like the ships fired first. The War was mot a popular idea up north, and making Lincoln look like a warmongering fool may have made the war politically impossible for the US. (Again diplomatic)

3. Had the Confederate troops at First Manassas been better organized, General Beauregard may have been able to launch an attack directly at Washington DC, it may have even succeeded. (Conversely a Confederate loss at Manassas, may actually end the war.)(The Occupation of DC would have provided a strong point North of the Potomac and forced negotiations.)

4. Better logistics. If General Longstreet had been the quartermaster for the Confederate armed forces, his superior understanding of logistics and supply chain management would have had the Confederates better dressed and equipped. Logistics were a constant problem for the Confederates. The day that General Lee's army, reduced to wearing rags, surrendered at Appomattox, Georgia had 50,000 uniforms and kit.

5. Better western leadership. Braxton Bragg was a good strategic thinker, however he seemed to view his men as disposable, and he did nothing to inspire the sort of confidence Robert Lee enjoyed with his men. There were several commanders that would have been better for the Army of Tennessee. Albert Johnston was available from the beginning and was a far more formidable field general, his policy of forcing the Union to attack him at strategic points would have worked much better. Further, General Nathan Forrest was confined to protecting Mississippi when he should have been destroying Union supply lines.

These five are good starting points. I disagree that British (or even British and French) intervention helps the South, for the simple reason if the South had successfully drawn them in, it would not have needed the help.

12. Falling down the side of a mountain and having your face peeled off...
...will do all kinds of strange shit to your head.

I give Williams a pass on a number of levels because he grew up in the impossible shadow of a legendary dad, had a controlling mother who tried to groom him into something he could never be, and...as I've already mentioned...pretty much had his face ripped off after one wrong step while climbing Ajax Mountain. According to Wikipedia, "It would eventually take nine major surgeries to put his face back together again"...

...and I'm sorry, but that shit CHANGES a man. We all know how it changed Hank. I don't want to have my face ripped off to find out how it would change me.

I'm not excusing racism, and I'm not trying to claim that "Bocephus" (Hank Williams Jr.'s mickname) is anything less than a redneck asshole.

I guess I'm just acknowledging how frigging lucky I was to NOT be born Hank Williams Jr.

53. The South would have joined with GB and France in WW1,
and the North would have joined with Germany and Austria-Hungry.

Without our help, Germany and AH would have defeated GB and France. And we would be re-fighting the Civil War here again, except this time with poison gas and machine-guns.

At least until triumphant Germans, Austrians, and Hungarians came swarming up the beaches of Virginia, marching towards Richmond.

Fun fun fun.

64. Well, remember that the French and the Brits...
were looking to find a way to support the South. French and British military observers were at Gettysburg, for example. I think the Brits and the French saw American-style democracy as a threat to their system of government and were seeking to discredit it.

If the CSA had managed to show they were capable of being an actual nation instead of a part of a civil war, the Brits and the French would have jumped in on their side. Our navy could not have maintained the blockade against the South, and with arms and food and allied troops to help them, the South could have forced an end to the war on their terms.

With the CSA beholden to the Brits and the French, a mutual-defense treaty or treaties would be likely. This era of history had a frenzy of secret mutual-defense treaties in Europe, with different alliances forming depending on who invaded what first. In fact, I believe there was a Sherlock Holmes story about him recovering one such treaty.

The large German-decended population of the North (Pennsylvania "Deuche" Country) would probably have aligned with Germany, and thus Austria-Hungry as well.

Sci-fi/alternative-history author Dr. Harry Turtledove explored this possibility in his The Great War Trilogy.
