This wa my first time watching this film. All I have to say is: Holy. Fucking. Shit. My little 13" TV does not do this great film any justice at all. I need to find a theater that's playing this!

1. I saw the original when it came out in the theaters way back when....

I can see why they cut what they cut. Two segments of the several they cut out of the original, they should have left in. The theft of the surfboard and the French plantation. Otherwise, the original was just fine and the redux was a bit too much, too long The movie was so long and over budget that it nearly ruined Coppola. It is still a masterpiece of the war genre in my opinion

2. I was somewhat touched by Mr. Clean's Funeral scene.
But one question: Was that a real cow they were hacking at at the end of the film?

a live animal. Looked sedated, but most certainly real. They filmed it in the Philippines, so had no problem with any local authority in staging it. BTW, you have to have a damned sharp machete to go through it like that. Gruesome, wasnt it?

4. It was a scheduled sacrifice...it wasn't written in the script.
Coppola was invited to film the sacrifice, which was part of a local ceremony.

6. Today, they'd do it on a computer
But it was important to the film, so even though I normally would object, this time I didn't.

who had a heart attack during the filming.
