Aside from a weekend hiatus (my knees were bothering me, and I thought I'd give 'em a break), I've been going to the gym every day and burning about 1,100 - 1,500 Calories on the elliptical.
Haven't seen much change in weight, but I really wasn't expecting it, not so soon, anyway.
The most noticeable difference is that the workout that (back in December) would get my heart rate up into the 190s (and sometimes even low 200s) now gets my HR into the 150s-160s, and sometimes low 170s, and I don't feel particularly winded.
My resting HR in Dec was in the mid 80s; it is now in the mid-to-high 60s.
Now, let's see if I can get my gut to part with that pesky intra-abdominal fat...

1. Intra-abdominal fat sucks! |
|
That's what makes my gut remain after all the exercising I did over the years.
By the way, I finally got my lazy ass back into the gym over the weekend. 33 minutes on the elliptical 500+ calories. Gotta get the cardio back up, then I'm back on the weights!

3. I think I'm back in good cardio shape. |
|
So I'm gonna either hit the weights, or go back to the strength training aerobic classes; you know, the ones where there are 25 cute young women, and me.

I also get shin splits rather easily. So, low impact for me. :P

Before I got down under 170 my knees wouldn't have appreciated it either. I'm still kinda stunned at how well they're holding up. I really fucked them up playing basketball when I was younger and I must have done a much better job of rehabing them than I thought.

I don't know what the hell I get, but whenever I run the outsides of my lower legs seem to seize up and get hard enough to cut glass. I don't know how to stop it, but it hurts like a bitch. No amount of stretching stops it.

16. I get something similar in the front of my calves, near the ankle. |
|
Even when I walk or run on a treadmill. I stretch before and after and it always happens. Plus, I have a pinched nerve in my should that acts up when I run. Bleh.

It started happening about a year before I got out of the marines, I found that running on the slightest left/right angle really aggrevated it, but never found a decent solution to the problem. It even happens on a bike, I wonder if it's my natural pidgeontoed stance that doesn't like being straightened out
Either way, it sucks.

18. It very well could have something to do... |

with your stance. The thing that was the base cause of all my ankle and knee problems when I was an athlete when I was younger had to do with my feet and how I walked. I have a bone in each foot that isn't shaped exactly normal. It rubs against the bone next to it and itaffects how I walk - I walk in a way that keeps it from rubbing hard and hurting.
Anyway, the basic point was that the way I walked was just fine but when I had to run a lot it caused problems for my ankles and knees. Once the doctors figured that out I had to learn to walk all over again. We found a gait that works for my whole body but it took a while. The upshot of that work is that I can run without pain now.

19. Hmmm...I pronate when I walk. Could that be it? |
|
Pronate is walking on the outsides of your feet, right? :dunce:

oh well, I guess I could learn to run in ski boots, but the people at the gym might frown upon that... especially on Basketball day..

25. Well, there were a couple of things... |
|
the biggest one was that I didn't really walk heel to toe. I tended to put all my weight forward on my foot. I also tended toward putting the weight too much on the outside of my foot - the bones that rub are both on the inside on my foot. So maybe the pronating thing has something to do with it for you and GOPisEvil both.
BUT...the key here is to go to a good orthopedist and find out what's wrong for you personally. I was lucky, there was a fairly well-respected ortho in my hometown - invented a knee-joint replacement that used to be the standard - and my dad worked for him sometimes. Along with my GP he was able to figure out what I was doing wrong and fix it.

7. Body Pump (or something similar) |
|
That looks like a really good workout. Plus, the one instructor on Saturday mornings is BEEEE-YOUTIFULL. Hubba!
I have a nice program developed for me by a trainer. I'm going to get back to that. I was starting to actually develop some muscles in my upper body. Stupid laziness.

I thought women got their belly fat over the abdominal muscles, and men got it underneath...

10. after the discussion here a week or so ago |

and after some tests that show i have widespread early osteoarthritis (i will be 50 this year), i have been trying slow weight lifting. i work out at the y, and they have all the "machines" i used to do 2-3 second reps. i am trying to get up to 6 seconds. it seems to be helping. i know i had a bad work out when my joints hurt, not my muscles. (i always chuckle to myself when some of the "big guys" put a big ole stack on and lift for 1/2 sec. i always wonder what they are like in bed.) as far as guts, i get a chuckle out of all the regulars that lift 300 lb, but have a gut like a pregnant woman. i am hooked on lifting, tho. and i hope i can keep it up. i am small, and grey haired, but i still have a big can of whoopass.

i've got a nice little weightlifting book (weider) with a great introduction on the benefits of weightlifting. i loved some of the stories listed. for example, during wwII, prisoners of war who weight lifted (using a barbell made from tin cans crushed together) did much better keeping their strength and health. keep at it-

190-200 range. That is dangerous. I hope you are undergoing this regime with the advice of a physician too.
