Confession: Okay. Now get this. I was raised a Fundy. No Shit. |
|
Yep, Mr Scorpio was raised a fundy, way back in the day, in Detroit.
But get this. In our church, we never dealt with politics. Our salvation didn't hinge on voting Republican. Imagine that.
Apolstolic, BTW. I have to say that this is typical of most black fundies I ever grew up with.
We lived in a Democratic voting, union membership, working class, Pat Roberson can kiss my black ass household. And God didn't strike us dead.
When I look these Bush loving, brain-dead fundies that make Christianity look like some alien religion to me, I have to shake my head.
Now I know that there are some progressive, non-Repug fundies out there. But where are they?
This is really confusing.

1. It sounds like your brand of fundamentalism |
|
is far more open minded than what I think of when I think fundy. I'm not a Christian but I believe Jesus would have been a Democrat if they'd been around in his day.

2. I was also raised fundy and was taken aback when I learned... |
|
...there were liberal Christians at my college. I don't consider liberals to be fundy. Fundies are too dogmatic to be open-minded and liberalism is about accepting new ideas.
I'm still recovering, in case you're wondering. Ain't easy when you have Bush-lovin', bible-thumpin', Jesus-jumpin' fundies trying to bring you back into the fold at every turn. At least they're nasty about it so I don't get sucked into the emotionalism of having lost my place in this world and the next (which I no longer believe in).

4. There was a lot of praying and speaking of tongues in church |
|
Lot's of bible study and Vacation Bible School.
It felf like a fundy lifestyle to me at the time.
But it never turned us into Reagan lovers.

3. Check this out. My life as a fundy |
|
We never condemned any gay relatives to Hell. Live and let live.
We never picketed an abortion clinic.
We were all public schooled.
We never sent any money into the 700 Club.
We were all Democrats.
Is this weird, or what?

5. I don't think it's wierd at all |
|
It sounds like your folks had a better grasp of the teachings of Christ than do the right wing fundies.
Well maybe it is kind of wierd seeing as how so many people don't live according to Christ's principles that claim to be his followers.

6. How about a progressive, non-Fundy Republican? |

This rec'd in email from a good friend back home, Carol, a 60-something Methodist Okie with beautiful, startling white hair and a shockingly outspoken personality to match (she lives in Huntington Beach, CA, where I'm from -- in my home district, even, the 46th):
Dear fellow travelers in the journey for justice:
Today I received my absentee ballot for the primary election. You may remember that I am a registered republican in Orange County -- don't ask, okay? Now it is debasing enough to have only George W. Bush or write-in as the presidential candidate choice -- although I could write in my own name I suppose.
But, oh the pain and woe, oh the sorrow: for the choice for the 46th district United States House of Representative is between Robert K. "Bob" (spear chucker) <a.k.a. "B-1 Bob"> Dornan and Dana (right wing surfin' buddy) Rohrabacher. Never in my 46 years of voting (had to wait then until we were 21) did the thought ever cross my mind that I would vote for a Dana Rohrabacher -- and I have had to chose between a lot of rascals. But now!!! -- I may just not vote.
crone/hermitess carol
I'm going to have to have a serious talk with my sisters. They didn't tell me that B-1 Bob -- unceremoniously, gloriously ousted from his seat in a neighboring district several years ago by Loretta Sanchez (not only a woman but a Hispanic woman! horrors!) -- was running against Rohrabacher in the Republican primary.
A very good friend of many friends back home, Gerrie Schipske, is running for the Democratic nomination and will probably get it. GO, GERRIE! Bless her dedicated heart, against B-1 Bob or Rohrabacher, her chances aren't very good, I'm afraid.

Detroit has two Dems repping our House districts (GO JOHN CONYERS!!!) and two Dem Senators.
The problems is that I'm stationed in Virginia (ALL REPUGS down here)
When I vote absentee, at least I don't have to hold my nose.
