Why have the images from space gotten so much sharper over the years (think first Gemini space walks vs shuttle EVAs) but the audio is STILL crap?

12. Simple... radio waves still have to be recieved.

Data packets have noise reduction built into them.

Also, think of the different freqs used. The radio has to work anywhere over the Earth, and to the Moon, no matter the time of day or angle.
So, they need a long wave length (low frequency) for audio.
They can send data packets in short bursts a short distance to a satelite reciever using a shorter wave length (high frequency) for data like pictures.

OK. Lets back up. We see a live interview from space. Pic is crystal clear as a live pic from, say, Iraq. But as opposed to the audio coming from Iraq simultaneouly with the pic (which sounds like any modern broadcast standard), the audio from shuttle sounds like radio traffic. They image and audio are traveling the same link, right?

IOW, I get radio interfernence and frequency compression in NASA communications w/ shuttle. But this audio could travel in the same digitized packet manner as the vid package, right?

24. No, not the same link

The audio is on a different frequency than the video is. They probably even go to different places on Earth.
The audio has to work, for the mission to continue. Video and pictures are nice, but not essential until landing.

So, to make sure there is radio comms with the craft, they have to use a frequency they know works from anywhere to anywhere, of which they cannot be sure of the frequency used for TV and data.
