Heh...Set Phasers on "Tide Turning"
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 03:06 PM by CanuckAmok
I just had a noodle around a forum I was chased out of last year, for being "a faggit LIEbrul", among other things. This forum was sooo pro-bush, it was scary.

It's a muscle car forum, so it's very blue-collar. And, as blue-collar ideology goes, the biggest loudmouths are always the neocon supporters, who are generally the ones being screwed by neocon policies.

I haven't been back to that forum, until today, but I thought I'd poke around. One of the biggest 'enemies' I had, said this, recently, in a post marked "President Bush: Love Him or Hate Him":

(there's still alot of pro-bush idiocy on the forum, but the existence of any type of dissent is truly remarkable, to me, particularly coming from the guys who are now in "?W" mode.

Dig this:

"...I've got enough problems with him tough, that I would probably vote for a Democrat for the first time in my life if the ultimate candidate could convince me he has serious, "forward strategy" for defeating the terrorists rather than just wanting to be popular with the op-ed section of the NYT and Le Monde. So far, they haven't shown me that they would be willing to do anything difficult or unpopular in this arena...."

Here's another plum, from a guy who threatened me physically, for my criticism of Dubya:

"Things I do NOT like about Bush...

He's a defniite crook. He has more big businesses in his pocket than any president in history.

His 'No Child Left Behind' education plan is totally insane.

His financial plan of cutting all those taxes, the biggest cuts to the rich, while the goveernment is forced to borrow $0.20 of every dollar they spend is ridiculus. It's not responsible. He's just trying to buy our votes.

Things I do like about him...

He's a straight talker, and doesn't take a lot of sh*t.

However, I couldn't stomach Gore as a president. John McCain didn't have hardly ANY big businesses funding his election, and would have had ZERO favors to pay back. He's a REAL war hero, and a helluva smart guy that would have been an EXCELLENT president. Bush WAY outspent him in the primary, and still didn't win by much. McCain would have been my first choice.

I don't really care who wins at this point..."

Ah, I am smug...

Why am I posting this here? To illustrate that two of the most blinded, violent and thoughtless Bush Uber Alles supporters I've ever met are rethinking their ideologies. And for every one of these guys, there's ten thousand who don't post on the internet.

The tide IS turning, people.

Here's the original link, if you want to see both sides...

on edit: one of the best posts was from the guy who said Bush couldn't possibly be a crook because he was a graduate of an Ivy League business school. :eyes:  :dunce:

1. Muscle cars waste energy
Plug that in your smug.

5. You're missing the point.
Every automobile wastes energy. The difference between a Honda Hybrid and a 390 Mustang is a matter of degree. Split all the hairs you choose, but if you drive any car, you might want to consider leaving your high horse at home.

7. Wow, they jump to pro-SUV rhetoric pretty quick
Very entertaining!

:D :D :D

Your SUV-driving contemporaries are riding the high horse. Of course they are both high and mighty, whereas musclecar drivers are just mighty.

Climate change is also a matter of degrees.

12. Humans will use every drop of oil on earth. That's certain.

Whether we do that in ten years or sixty is pretty unimportant, on an environmental time-line.

But if blindly bashing a section of the public for your perception of their impact on the environment makes you feel better, then go crazy.

If joe sixpack has an Excursion but rides his bike to the 7-11 everyday, is he more of an impact on the environment than then the guy who drives his Prius there everyday?

Sweeping generalizations based on what someone has in his garage is very unprogressive, and rather offensive to me personally. We have two trucks in my family. We use them both when we feel it's appropriate (which in our case does not mean everyday), and that's not for you to judge.

edit: typo

14. This is fascinating
I've almost instantly turned you into one of them, with a mere grumble. You said you were feeling smug; now that I have caused a defensive reaction I am glad to see I could help with the smugness problem. :)

"Sweeping generalizations based on what someone has in his garage is very unprogressive..."

Oh, no it isn't. People may become used to confusing consumer choices with basic differences such as skin color as a result of hanging out with a freeper demographic (it is a common habbit on the Right), but they have no legitimate claim to being 'offended' or feeling wrongly singled-out over an off-hand comment on their hardware.
:nopity:

A while back I found a thread with people salivating over Lord Of The Rings and posted a simple question if anyone thought the spectre of Orcs being black, wearing dreadlocks, and cursed with evil (that old racist idea about blacks being the descendants of Cain and therefore evil) wasn't a manifestation of racism. The response: "F*ck You! What an *sshole!" etc, etc.

It happens now and then, and I usually laugh my ass off.

So thanks.. What fun! ;)

...as you seem to believe it is, you'll have a ball here.

Thanks for the pop-psych analysis of my defense mechanism, by the way. What do I owe you? Or is playing with my particular brand of cornered mouse enough payment for you?

on edit: oh, yeah, the 'ignore' feature...never tried it before. Now you're going to have to find someone else to condescend to. Shouldn't take you long.

edit: I noticed you never answered my car question. So, do you drive, or are you magically conveyed by your own sense of self-righteousness? You don't need to answer for my benefit, as you're on ignore, but I imagine other people would like to know if you actually put your money where your mouth is.

16. And as you field the same sort of responses from the muscle-car people
Edited on Fri Feb-06-04 05:21 PM by cprise
that you just offered up to me (pop-psych, ignore, hee hee!), allow me to proclaim that our shared capacity to buzz muscle-car people who react allergically to progressive sentiments may, one day, overcome this blight on our community known as 'ignore'.

edit: Do remember, judge a freeper not by the figurehead he has sitting in office... but by how he uses him!

But I have a feeling that this guy's definition of doing something difficult or unpopular might involve dropping a nuke on brown people.

9. When they say things like "I don't really care who wins at this point"...
... they have lost.

It's all about energizing your base. Their base was energized after the Clinton sex scandal because they simply thought it was "yucky" to have a president who behaved that way.

Now, however, their base has lost their energy, whereas ours is on fire!

18. Actually, they win
when the 'progressives' spout hard-right positions like the following:

"Humans will use every drop of oil on earth. That's certain.
Whether we do that in ten years or sixty is pretty unimportant.."

A nice, authoritative one-liner bereft of hope and worthy of a Limbaugh listener.

You see, it doesn't matter the 'progressive' says.

20. my '54 Olds gets 18 mpg
which will probably improve when i get the proper (taller) size tires on it.i call it a hot rod,but you would see it as a "muscle car" i suppose.since i finished rebuilding the engine last year i've probably only put about 1000 miles on it,mostly highway.i'm helping my nephew build a '68 mustang, complete with fuel injection.i'd be very surprised if it doesn't get at least 22 mpg when we're done.BTW most muscle cars and hot rods rarely go more than 2500 miles per year, usually because of insurance restrictions.you might also consider the fact that it takes less energy to "recycle" an old car than it does to build a new one.oh well, that's enough for now,it's time for me to ride my schwinn to the store

21. BTW one more time
you might consider being nicer to muscle car and hot rod types, they might help you out when you have to convert to alcohol or bio-diesel.i have a garage full of tools and 25 years of tinkering under my belt, alternative fuels will be a cakewalk for me!
