This sort of nonsense about the Chinese eating rats, mices, cats etc., was a constant theme in the late 19th to early twentieth century anti-Chinese diatribe. With as many Asians living in this country, it's pretty regressive that this sort of stereotyping in the guise of humor is still around.

5. Well, it is not nonsense. There are places in China where cats |

and dogs are raised like we raise chickens and beef. If you would like a link, I can provide, but the last time I put it here, there was a huge uproar about it. It is pretty graphic stuff.
That said, I do agree the link is rather offensive, bordering on racist.

7. I saw puppies and kittens sold in street markets in China.... |
|

...as food. It was horrifying to the dog lover that I am. Also had previously seen cats sold as food in Haiti.
Also in China in the Peace Hotel in Shanghai (have you stayed there WannaJump? I was in China in 1982 and there were few "upscale" hotels in Shanghai then), there was a fur coat in the hotel gift shop -- in a glass case as if it was extremely valuable. I asked the clerk what kind of fur it was. She said "dog". Yes, the images you could post would be extremely graphic. We have both seen them in real life. And many here would freak out at the sight of them.
On edit: I agree about it being offensive and racist. Seen this on DU previously. China is a great country.

10. No, I have not stayed there. When in Shanghai, I have friends |
|
that live there.
But I did see the same sort of thing in hotels in Canton and Hong Kong. Both dog and cat fur coats for sale.
I suppose it is all a matter of perspective. Our pets live better than half the people in the world, so who are we to judge?

11. Yes, but I hated seeing dogs sold as food. |

I am a dog lover. And dogs love me. No fleas on me, though. LOL.

not to say you can't feel bad, your feelings are legitimate and a part of our culture, but so long as you don't say that eating dog is wrong, you're okay.

I watched a segment on cable one time and they were killing cats and dogs and I have thought about it for years. I would become a vegetarian before I would eat a Cat, Dog, Monkey or a rat.
I am trying to kick the habit of eat meat all together.
I can remember them putting a white cat down in water and boiling it alive and they stuffed the dogs nose and killed it.
It gave my Mom and I nightmares and she is gone now but we cried when we saw that documentary.
My Mom started swearing at the TV set and crying and it was so sad.

Nothing to laugh about. Even the first time I saw it on DU, which was weeks ago.

13. How's it any different than killing a cow or a pig? |
|
I've slaughtered many animals, and it's never pretty.
We have a taboo against eating cats, dogs, and horses in the US.
Other parts of the world do not.
My friend in Thailand eats rat.
Don't be judgmental.
I can't understand if you want to be vegetarian, so I'm not toally accusing you - sounds like at least you're being consistent - but I'm totally fed up with people who will eat other meat, and then say that eating cats and dogs and rats is "inhuman". Bullshit. It isn't. Unless you believe ALL meat is wrong.
it's just culture.
A Hindu would lookat our beef eating and say "it's inhuman", but they'll still eat lamb and goat.

Sent the link to some friends of theirs and it's getting around.
I think that it's funny but some people would find it offensive.

Some Chinese food is awesome, real high class stuff.
But the place I like, you literally can't tell different stuff apart (which is why I have bean curd...mmmmm, curd)
