As an adult, is it okay to smoke pot with your parents??
I had lunch with a girlfriend today, and she has been dating a guy for 3 months now, and they both seem very interested in each other. They are both in their 30's, are liberals, and have never been married. He took her to meet his parents, and told her that his parents are former "hippies", and that he smokes pot with his parents when they get together. This has totally freaked her out. She doesn't smoke pot herself, but knows other people that do, and doesn't have a problem with that. I think it's the parent thing that is bothering her. I told her that she probably wouldn't be able to change his relationship with his parents, so would have to decide if this is something she can accept and live with. Any words of advice?

1. No biggie
I smoke with my parents on Xmas morning, and my fiancee smokes with his parents occasionally. I don't think it's that uncommon.

6. At what age did you start smoking pot with your parents?
This is a problem I will never have to worry about with my mom!

2. Does she have a problem with people who drink with their parents?
It's no different. Just cause the guvmit thinks it's bad doesn't mean we feel guilty about it.

3. A lot of people smoke...
...pot with their parents.

I used to smoke pot with my mum (my parents are divorced), a lot once. But now I don't smoke it after a bad reaction.

4. I think it's a bit odd but I don't smoke pot...

if they all do then what the heck.. why not.

Being she doesn't smoke pot like me I understand her reaction. I wouldn't make it the end of a relationship if that was the only thing that buggged me.. but I wouldn't partake or want to be around it.

I guess since everyone I know that smokes pot doesn't want their parents to know it is what makes me think it seems odd. It's cool he's got that kind of relationship with his folks.

5. Are his parents adults, too?
Then what's the big deal?

Seriously, why is she freaking out about it?

And if she actually does expect to change his relationship with his parents, in any way, shape, or form, she'd do better to just break up with him now and save everybody a lot of grief.

10. If they smoke too
I know a few people that smoke pot with their parents. Why wouldn't they if they both smoke. Someone else in this thread compared it to alcohol. In some families, adult children would never drink around their parents if their parents did not drink much themselves or generally disapproved of drinking. In other families, alcohol is very much accepted and the family drinks together. Most people think that their parents would not of pot smoking but some do and smoke themselves. It is natural for parents and adult children who find smoking pot, as or more acceptable than drinking, should smoke together.

11. When I was in college,
and this was many years ago, we used to have big parties every weekend at my apartment. My mother showed up one evening unexpectedly of course and I did not know until I passed the joint to the next person and it was her. Well, she took a hit, passed it on and that was that. I see no problem with it as adults. As far as I know that was the first and only time she ever did that but it was certainly funny.

12. When I was in high school
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 02:38 AM by VancSouthpaw
I went to a friends house and we smoked with his grandmother and his great-grandmother. They were cute - trying to get the place aired out before his mother came home and caught them, because she wouldn't like it.

But, as far as adults smoking with their parents - why not. People drink with their parents all the time.
