If you haven't seen "Bruce Almighty" yet... I pity you.
I saw it with some Christians last night.

All I can say is (pardon the pun, but) oh my... God! I haven't laughed that hard in many months!

Jim Carrey plays Bruce, a news correspondent in Buffalo who wanted to replace a retiring longtime news legend. When he didn't get the anchor role, he got angry. I don't know what happened next, but he got canned from the station.

He found a job at Omni Presents, Inc., where the janitor, portrayed by Morgan Freeman, says he is God. Long story, but eventually he gives Bruce his powers.

Bruce then decides to use his powers to screw with the mind of that anchor, so he could become the anchor. That has to be the funniest thing I have seen in a LONG time! I was hurting from laughing!

1. Thanks for the heads up. Now go see "Fog of War," ih8thegop
I promise you this: I will go see "Bruce Almighty," if you will go see "Fog of War," about McNamara and Vietnam (you won't be disappointed; it is well done and gripping). Do we have a deal?

2. "Almighty Bruce" is garbage
I saw "Bruce" with my Christian family friends and consider the movie blasphemous. It's been a long time since being a member of a church, but I saw Jim Carey take more liberties with artistic license than any fictional portrayal of spirituality I've ever seen. Yet, because the movie is labeled a comedy, and supposedly christian, none of the moral distortion was questioned by my friends. I told them it stank and they think my opinion overly critical. Fundamentalists get their cues about right and wrong from church authorities, not from applications in their own experience. "Almighty Bruce" is garbage.

Care to cite a few examples? Because I can't remember one single blasphemous event in the movie.

10. Possible blasphemy moments
It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but I would guess some people might find using the omnipotent power of God to enlarge one's girlfriend's breasts to be blasphemous. On the other hand, it is a pretty human male thing to do, probably.

There were definitely places where Bruce used the power he had been given for his own gain or in some abusive manner. Some would consider that blasphemous.

I think it all needs to put in context ... to see where he starts and where he ends up.

12. maybe
But I can't see how those instances can be considered blasphemous. How do those situations say anything bad about anybody, except Bruce?

Personally, I thought the movie to really reinforce Xtian dogma. That being, God is so powerful and mysterious, don't even bother asking questions.

8. I found much to appreciate in Bruce Almighty
I'll start right off by saying I'm a Christian and, although I'm not a huge Jim Carrey fan, I enjoyed the movie.

Was there some material that was in questionable taste? Sure. Would a huge number of human beings suddenly endowed with omnipotence, especially if they'd not been religious or spiritual people before that experience behave with questionable taste and abuse the power? Absolutely.

I loved, though, what happened when he was overwhelmed with prayer requests. I loved the image of what happens if everything everyone asks for in prayer were to come to be. And I appreciated the redemptive moments.

Sure, I wish that the campiness had been toned down. The movie made its point pretty early on and I would have loved to see what they might have done if they'd had more time to show what happened to Jim Carrey's character after he "came to himself" (in the sense in which that phrase is used in the story of the Prodigal Son).

Frankly, I see this movie as presenting several movie clip moments for possible usage in contemporary, multi-media worship services.

4. I agree with the original poster. My sig other and I watched it
yesterday. One of the funniest movies I have seen in a very long time. I must disagree with the poster that considered the movie blasphemous. I too am Christian, but laughed my butt off. Nothing disrespectful in my opinion.

9. I disagree with you all
I didn't think it was hilariouis, or blasphemus. I thought it was fluff.
Jim Carrey needs to let go of Ace Ventura.
