8. That was a highpoint for mainstream rock....
I remember hearing even the radio hits off that CD and being impressed. They really were a great BAND...Thayil and Cameron especially. Great chemistry, unique songwriting approach, psychedic atmosphere, wailin' bluesy vocals....and yet some people had the nerve to say: "just more of that grunge crap." Some people are fools.

5. I liked ashes in the fall esp the line
Ain't it funny how the factory doors close
Round the time that the school doors close
Round the time that the doors of the jail cells
Open up to greet you like the reaper

3. "Stella Maris", by Einsturzende Neubauten.
I know it's obscure, but it is one of the most haunting, beautiful songs I've ever heard. It is sung in German, which is so very beautiful to hear, but here are the English lyrics:

Stella Maris
I dream I'll meet you deep deep down
The deepest point on Earth, Mariana Trench, ocean bottom
Between Nanga Parbat, K 2 and Everest,
The crest of the world, there you'll be my banquet guest
Where nothing more can impede my vision
When you com I'll see you coming from the world's margin
Here there's nothing of interest
The ruins of Atlantis just
But of you not a trace
I don't think you're coming anymore
We missed each other in our dreams
You dream me, I you
Don't worry, I won't wake you
Before you wake up yourself
Across the ice towards the North Pole is where I'll expect you
Will be standing on the axis
From Tierra del Fuego in hard dream labour to the pole
There everything will revolve just around us
The Pole Star directly above me
This is the pole I'll wait here
Only I cannot see you cmoing from anywhere for miles around
I'm waiting at the wrong pole
We missed each other in our dreams
You dream me, I you
Don't worry, I won't wake you
Before you wake up yourself
Please, please don't wake me
Only as long as I dream do you exist...
Enlist in slumber on a ship
Course: Eldorado, Punt, that's your home
Wait on the coast, look on the horizon
Until I at last see your sails there
But the captain is always drunk
And mostly down below deck
I can't steer this ship in my wildest dreams
On a riff it springs a leek
In the North Sea it then sunk
An iceberg drives me back
I think I'll be waiting for long
Punt stays undiscovered
We missed each other in our dreams
You dream me, I you
Don't worry, I won't wake you
Before you wake up yourself
You dream me, I you
Don't worry, I'll find you
Before you wake up yourself
Collared in a doze I'll grab you
And pull you towards me
For you dream me, I you
I dream you, you me
We dream each other awake

A close second has to be "The Day I Tried to Live", by Soundgarden:

I woke the same as any other day
Except a voice was in my head
It said seize the day, pull the trigger, drop the blade
And watch the rolling heads
The day I tried to live
I stole a thousand beggar's change
And gave it to the rich
The day I tried to win
I dangled from the power lines
And let the martyrs stretch
Singing
"One more time around
Might do it
One more time around
Might make it
One more time around
Might do it
One more time around"
The day I tried to live
Words you say never seem
To live up to the ones
Inside your head
The lives we make
Never seem to ever get us anywhere
But dead
The day I tried to live
I wallowed in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs
I woke the same as any other day you know
I should have stayed in bed
The day I tried to live
I wallowed in the blood and mud with
All the other pigs

And I learned that I was a liar

Just like you

7. Guided By Voices: "Echoes Myron."
Edited on Sun Feb-08-04 05:00 PM by RandomKoolzip
Oh, god, there are so many, but that's the best song I've ever heard in my LIFE, let alone just the 90's. Here's a few more:

Ben Folds Five: "Emaline"
Chisel: "Innocents Abroad"
Flaming Lips: "Race for the Prize"
Sleater-Kinney: "The Day you Went Away"
Harvey Danger: "Flagpole Sitta"
Elvis Costello: "This is Hell"
The Wrens: "I've Made Enough Friends"
Oasis: "don't Go Away"
Jawbox: "savory"
Everclear: "I Will Buy You a New Life"
Fastball: "the Way" (The Fastball, Harvey Danger, Oasis, and Everclear songs were all from 1998, actually a very good year for rock on the radio: I heard all of them FIRST on the radio....do you know how rare that is, for me to actually LOVE a song I hear on pop radio?!)
Excuse 17: "Watchman"
The Amps: "I am Decided"
Dr. Dre: "Let Me Ride"
Dub Narcotic Sound System: "Ship to Shore"
The Jayhawks: "Blue"
Jason Falkner: "Don't Show me Heaven"
Jellyfish: "all is Forgiven"
Mineral: "Gloria"
Texas is the Reason: "If it's Here When We Get Back it's Ours"
Samiam: "Ordinary Life"
RuthRuth: "Mission Idiot"

And about a thousand other songs by Neutral Milk Hotel, Grant Lee Buffalo, Shudder to Think, OutKast, The Wrens, Wesley Willis, RATM, The Coctails, Fugazi, Guided by Voices, Karate, Ben Folds, Slint, Ted Leo, etc......I LOVED the 90's. I don't wanna hear any more bellyaching about the shitty music of the 90's if you were stupid enough NOT to get involved in the indie rock scene and instead settled for radio pop and corporate rock....You DO have choices, y'know.

10. "Circle of Beliefs" by Slayer
From Divine Intervention released in 1994. Typical social commentary from the Slayboys about the hypocrisy of Christianity.

14. I Can't listen to "Show" without tearing up...
Just the thought of Freddie, as ill as he was, summoning up the energy to record that. And, lyrically, that becomes so much more poignant:

"...The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on..."

What a brave statement.
