Is anyone here aware of Dr. Emoto's studies into the effects of thought upon water?
Sounds weird, but water changes, if subjected to music or specific intent.

Freeze it and then isolate the resulting crystals.

This works in reverse as well. Hateful music and thought cause as extreme a reversal. As stated in the otherwise useless film "What the bleep do we know", we are mostly made of water.

This is empiric. I'm surprised that western science hasn't latched onto it.

And I can see few better scientific reasons to avoid negativity. Obviously, choosing to be happy does have an effect upon us.

1. .
"Emoto's water crystal experiments consist of exposing water in glasses to
different words, pictures, or music, and then freezing and examining the
aesthetics of the resulting crystals with microscopic photography.

Emoto's work does not adhere to the long established practices and procedures of
the Scientific Method, such as Double blind controls, which have been developed to
reduce the effect of statistical anomalies and experimenter bias."

3. Thanks, I had been unaware of his critics.
I'd be very interested if anyone else had repeated his experiments, in order to determine empiricism. Has anyone? Let's call Emoto's work "initial findings". They are compelling, to say the least. I hope that others may come forward and either prove him wrong, or right.

6. compelling?
"Even sympathetic commentators have criticized Emoto for insufficient experimental controls,<3>
and for not sharing enough details of his approach with the scientific community. <4>
In addition, Emoto has been criticized for designing his experiments in ways that leave
them open to human error influencing his findings. <5>

In the day-to-day work of his group, the creativity of the photographers rather than
the rigor of the experiment is an explicit policy of Emoto.<6> Emoto freely acknowledges
that he is not a scientist,<7> and that photographers are instructed to
select the most pleasing photographs
.<8>"

7. I agree, more information is required, have you considered the variances?
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 12:07 PM by Peake
I am eager for others to either prove or disprove this. I am willing to dismiss his work if it is found, repeatedly, to be fraudulent.

It looks like "something is there". I hope for more information before I dismiss that something.

Edit: As an addict, I've seen benefits in myself and others when they determine to simply be happy and grateful. Health, among them.

2. so prayer turns water into Christmas ornaments?
I haven't heard of it, and I'll admit that there are a lot of things in the world that I don't understand, but color me skeptical on this one. I'm thinking there is likely some experimenter bias in these studies.

5. umm prayer makes a snowflake?
I think this is unadulterated bs, freezing water causes it to become solid and form lattices anyway.
Looks to me like he is pulling out a snowflake...formed by atmospherics as "proof" of his theory as opposed to regular ice.
How can one tell that he just didn't walk outside and grab an ordinary snowflake (which is what his little crystal is).
This idea of water changine with intent...goes agaisnt all the laws of chemistry I have had some stoichiometry training so I do understand the molecular structure of water and how it behaves. And despite what this guy claims, water's molecular behavior is pretty well understood by scientists. In fact water's molecular structure is the basis for most of modern chemistry.
In other words, this is psuedoscience, totally unsupported by scientific theory, period.

9. Thanks.
I'd certainly like to see these experiments repeated in what would be called an empiric environment. I'm willing to throw out my belief in this if several are able to fully dismiss it.

10. I saw these photographs in a movie
Called "What the 'bleep' Do We Know?"

It was about, quantum physics, metaphysics, generally all kinds on Groovey, New Wavey thought.

11. I've been working in this field of research from some time.
Here's my exciting results.

Water, before it goes in the freezer.

Water, before my scotch

Water, during my scotch (notice two different phases and colors and aesthetically pleasing forms)

Would you like to see what the water looks like after the scotch?

When will western science learn?
