Do you play chess?
It is my favorite game of all.
The best strategic game of all time.
It sure beats Playstation stuff, IMHO.
Who else plays chess here?

1. I do, but I suck royally.
I always fail to see that discreet diagonal leading from the other guy's bishop to my Queen. Gaaak.

anyone can beat me . . . my best friend beats me regularly . . . my 15-year-old nephew beats me . . . a 13-year-old who I TAUGHT how to play beats me . . . course, I keep telling them that I'm letting them win so they won't quit playing me . . . I lie . . .

2. I like to play
as long as it's against a human opponent. I hate playing chess against a computer.

3. Same here.
I enjoy playing against people that are better than myself actually.
It's the challenge thing, plus it has improved my skill over the years.
I prefer to take some time when playing, it's the socialization too.

4. Would like to
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 01:35 PM by supernova
I would like to find someone to play with. I very much enjoy games of strategy.

I would like to take my time. I don't like the whole tournament/timed thing. Part if it would be just spending time visiting too.

edit: spelling

7. I Was a Chess Fiend in High School
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 01:34 PM by ribofunk
Played second or third board on the high school team.

I was rated 1650 in 10th grade, and beat some pretty decent players.

9. Love the large, sidewalk chessboards in European
parks. Play is very much a physical as well as strategic game because you have to walk the very large pieces, really forms of public sculpture, to their squares.

The game also becomes part performance art and community happening too b/c spectators will stop and want to offer advice. :D

10. I am not rated
Were I to have a rating I believe I would be class C or B. Class A is the last rate before ranking by numerical score. I don't like playing against the computer because computers don't play like people do. Most chess programs give a weight to a certian move based on the current position of all the pieces. I played against my father and grandfather but now they are both at the great chess match in the sky. I read somewhere that chess masters and beginners were given CAT scans while planning next moves. Those who were ranked at master hardly showed any neural activity while the beginners showed a lot more thinking going on. I still think a lot so obviously I am no master.

One thing I'd like to have would be a giant chess board with hundreds of squares. Before the modern game came about chess was played on large boards with hundreds of pieces, two ranks of pawns, different kinds of rooks and knights, and the like. The modern 64-square game is much distilled down from chess games of old.

13. Yes, but NOTHING beats Grand Theft Auto
What other game can you fire up and decide that you're only going to club people wearing suits today?

17. Used to play a lot.
Bumped my rating up to about 1530 last time I played. That was before I found Unreal Tournament and playing online. About four years I'd say. Given the limited pool of UT players in comparison to chess, I'd say I'm 90th percentile talent wise now. I much prefer that.

Semi-leet. :)

Chess, I'm just a patzer.

I used to play lots of blitz on FICS.

Course, there's probably just as many cheaters there as in UT. And god forbid you say "gg" after drubbing someone without them going apeshit. It can still be done in UT.

18. I have the worst luck on the planet when it comes to games
Blackjack, the track, board games, strategy games...

Anything involving dice or cards and I will find a way to get fucked over by probablity.

But, none of those exist in chess. Its just you, the pieces, and your opponent.

No luck, no chance.

Just strategy.

I therefore love playing chess.

as a chess player, but I'll bet several of the Democratic candidates play.
OTOH, I do think George W. Bush loves to play War.:grr:

21. Being a native Wisconsinite, Sheepshead is my favorite card game.
Euchre is a nice trump game too. I also enjoy Poker.
But chess-nothing else like it anywhere IMHO.
