I've been stuck at home with a recovering cat and my own head injury so I thought I might catalogue a box of old albums I was given by a friend back in 1983 for safe keeping. I put these away after his death and haven't looked at them for 20 years but boredom got the best of me. They are in perfect condition, or seem to be. I'll need to drag out the old turntable. It's around here somewhere. I recognize most of them but not all. So what do you think? Aside from the pop classics, any gems?
Billy Joel -- 52nd Street Billy Joel -- Piano Man Billy Joel -- Streetlife Serenade Billy Joel -- The Stranger Bob James -- Four Boz Scaggs -- Slow Dancer Bruce Springsteen -- Darkness on the Edge of Town Cat Stevens -- Numbers: A Pythagorean Theory Tale Cheech and Chong -- Cheech and Chong Dan Fogelberg -- Captured Angel Dan Fogelberg -- Souvenirs Deodato -- Prelude Emerson, Lake and Palmer -- Tarkus Gary Lewis and the Playboys -- A Session with Gary Lewis and The Playboys Gary Lewis and the Playboys -- Golden Greats George Harrison -- Thirty-three and 1/3 Hall & Oates -- Bigger than Both of Us J.J. 1. Try the Jesse Colin Young |
|
not one of his most prominent, but I love all his stuff, Youngbloods and afterwards. He lives in Hawaii now and grows coffee.
And if you haven't already, put on Joni Mitchell's Blue. A classic if ever there was one.

2. I had Minute By Minute on vinyl yoo |
|
Damn, that's a good album. Actually, all of those are pretty damn good which must mean I'm just in a "Doobies" kinda mood at the moment.

4. I remember the title song |

It's stuck in my head now. The album cover is in perfect condition and still has the sleeve with all the lyrics.

6. I rose too quickly from the edge of the couch |

And forgot the Nordic Trak was there. Banged myself good on the right side of my head. Have a mild but constant headache on the other side (?) ever since. Went to the ER when my left pupil stopped responding to light but they say I'm ok, just need rest. Weird experience cuz I've cracked my head many times over the years but never had the constant headache and occasional nausea like this one.
Yeah, I like the collection. Some dupes of what I used to have but never took good care of.

Most of those are my favorites, as well. Let us know when you find the turntable, LOL! Take good care of your head and the cat.:D

a respectable cross-section of the 70s singer/songwriter pantheon.
Cheech and Chong seems oddly out of place, but oddly not.

9. Yeah, I guess singer/songwriters are well represented |
|
But that was the way back then. Cheech and Chong don't seem as out of place to me as Gary Lewis. I strongly suspect my friend had gotten them from his older brother.

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers: a classic rock staple
The Rolling Stones - Now!: great old R&B; try listening to it while you play video games
The Who - Who's next: cheap red wine, a loaded bong, or both
Wings - Venus and Mars: easily the best album Paul McCartney did outside the Beatles

11. Can you record them to CD? |
|
Sounds like your friend had excellent taste in music.
I've been doing that with my old LP collection. The results have been so good, I got obsessed with it. Before long, I had a Sound Blaster Audigy series soundcard (THX certified! w00t!) and a Stanton turntable (thank God for hip hop) with a really good cartridge/stylus just to do this thing I do. My wife thinks I'm nuts.
You should see my setup. My PC is now a gigantic tape deck, with over a hundred albums on the hard drive in MP3 format. No, I do NOT have Kazaa.

12. I think I'd rather sample them (with my ears, that is) and then buy CDs |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 08:45 PM by nuxvomica
If I really like the music and want it on CD, I'll just buy it. Then I can compare the richness of analog against the precision of digital.
edit: how much do you think a setup like that would cost me? I basically need the thingy that goes between the turntable and the computer, whatever that is.
