1. Some people say...
you can grind them up, sprinkle them in your garden, and it keeps the cats from using it as a litter box.

:)

I think you have to dry them first, though. Here in humid Florida they get moldy really fast.

Low oven should do it, and it probably would make your house smell good.

4. Used to press the oil out (with a mortar and pestle) and boil it in tap water
Wonderful smell for hours. But grinding the peels will do the same.

7. Orange peel chicken
Sauce

1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 tablespoons minced garlic
4 green onions, sliced
1 cup tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons oriental chili-garlic sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce

chicken

1/2 cup vegetable oil
4 chicken breast fillets
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
1 orange (peel from 1/4 orange, julienned into 1/8-inch thick strips)
1 cup sugar snap peas

1. Prepare sauce by heating 1 tablespoon of oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sliced green onions. Add tomato sauce and water quickly before the garlic burns. Add sugar, chili garlic sauce and soy sauce and bring to a boil. Simmer 5 to 6 minutes or until sauce thickens, then turn off the heat.

2. Prepare the chicken by heating 1/2 cup oil in a wok over medium heat. Slice chicken breast fillets into bite-size pieces. Combine beaten egg with milk in a medium bowl. Pour the flour into another medium bowl.

3. Coat chicken pieces by dropping them into the flour a few at a time, then into the egg/milk mixture and back into the flour. Arrange coated chicken on a plate until all chicken is coated.

4. When oil in the wok is hot, add about half of the chicken to the oil and cook for a couple minutes or until brown on one side, then flip the chicken over. When chicken is golden brown, remove the pieces to a rack or paper towels to drain. Repeat with the remaining chicken. When all of the chicken is cooked rinse the oil out of the wok with water and place it back on the stove to heat up.

5. When wok is hot again add julienned orange peel and chicken. Heat for 20 to 30 seconds or so, stirring gently. Add sugar peas and sauce to the pan and cook for about 2 minutes. Stir dish a couple times but do it gently so you don't knock the coating off the chicken. Cook until the sauce thickens then serve up the dish with white or brown rice on the side.

About every other year for Xmas I make Candied Grapefruit Peels, too :)

(I've never used these recipes since I have some "tried and true" recipes from an old magazine, but the techniques are the same.)

40. I don't see why you couldn't do this with...
...any of the citrus fruits. You may have to experiment with each kind to test for bitterness from the pith. It would be kind of fun to do that kind of experimentation some weekend afternoon :)

The drool smiley I "borrowed" from the vegetarian messageboard VeggieBoards :D

A smiley I found elsewhere that would useful here is this one:

28. Orangecello!
Wash and scrub your orange peels to remove any waxes, bug poo, dirt, grime, etc. making sure, as much as possible, to not rupture the oil-containing pores of your peels.

Using a vegetable peeler, microplane or zester, remove the outer zest from the pith, leaving as little (or preferably no) pith on your peels.

Place the peels into a large screw-top jar and cover with one bottle of 100 proof vodka (or grain alcohol or moonshine). Place the jar in a closet or other temperate, safe place out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks, shaking occasionally. Also, give it the occasional sniff.

You'll be able to see the vodka turning bright orange-yellow as it pulls flavorful oils from the peels. When the peels look dull and the orangecello doesn't seem to be gaining any visible color or scent, it's done. (10 to 21 days.) Pour through a coffee filter or cheesecloth into a second jar and press-down to remove all the liquid that you can from the peels. Add a 1:1 simple syrup (2 cups water to 2 cups sugar boiled until solute, then cooled to room temperature).

Thin further with a 750 ml bottle of your favorite good-quality vodka (or other neutral spirit). If it needs to be cut down or sweetened further, add filtered or bottled water and more simple syrup to taste. Let age a week.

Stick it in the freezer, it won't freeze, but it's amazing at 0'F served as an aperitif. Add it to hot or iced tea, pour over ice cream, mix into coffee, or drink it straight. It has 1,000,000 uses.

Best part is that because you're sourcing your own ingredients, you can be sure of what's in it. Personally, I always use vegan sugar and organic oranges. That's just me. I know a woman who uses honey(eww!) instead of simple syrup and blood oranges. It's versatile, the same recipe works to make limoncello, limecello, grapefruitcello. Experiment...have fun.

Labor and time intensive, but worth it. The rest of primary-season, and possibly the remainder of the Bush Moron Presiduncy will fly by in one long blissful haze.

31. Slice and dry them...
Dried orange peel keeps well and comes in handy for a lot of things...used the last of mine in fruitcake.

If you're into making your own teas (I'm not, but some people do) it is a popular ingredient...or you can add it to an existing mixture.

Do try to remove as much of the bitter white pith as you can though if you're planning on using it to flavor stuff.
If you're going to use if for scent, don't worry about it.

They also make an excellent source of slow-release nitrogen in the soil for potted plants...
I've used them for bulbs I've forced with excellent results.
So do banana peels or coffee grounds...but you asked about oranges.
