I survived my 8-hour interview!

Just wanted to check in, and let you all know i survived! Your good vibes, fashion advice, and hugs were SO appreciated. :loveya:

The interview went REALLY well, but i won't hear anything for 2 weeks. I did find out they interviewed 5 applicants for this job, so i'm sure i still have some stiff competition. x(

Because you all helped me with my wardrobe decision, i felt it was only right to post a pic of the interview ensemble (geek chic, LOL)...

Thanks again Loungies... you all are the BEST! :yourock:

64. Rainfall isn't the only metric for an area to be labeled "desert". Most people wouldn't consider
Antarctica a desert, but technically, it is.

So don't be raining on Tucson's desert parade!

91. right...humidity and temperature are the factors for designating
a desert.

I'm only messing with you because, during my graduate work, I developed a "desert snobbery" since we worked on animal physiology of birds in the Arabian Desert. We would joke about "real deserts" and "wannabe deserts."

We said that those in the US weren't real b/c they weren't hot enough, dry enough, or big enough.

Cheers to living without water! :toast:

11. Thanks lost!

I am SO exhausted... i've never talked so much in one day in my life!!! I met with individuals and groups all day, and said many of the same things over and over... but i think i did a good job explaining all my ideas, background, qualifications, etc. I don't think there's anything else i could have done to be more prepared, so that's a good feeling. At least if i don't get it i won't be wondering what else i could have done... it'll just be that they had someone else older and more qualified!

I am up early and about to head to the airport... so more details to follow. Basically i was meeting with individuals (VP, Curator) and then small groups (other curators, keepers, vet staff, finance people, etc) ALL DAY! I had a bunch of research ideas prepared that i shared with them, and got the usual drill about my background, "do you work well with others," etc.

So far so good... now time to wait and see!

63. You look great!
I have to ask you about interview questions. Did you get the one "Where do you see yourself in five years?" - or "What is your greatest strength and your greatest weakness?" or "What were the most annoying parts of your previous position?" _the answer, of course, is nothing. Never say anything bad about anyone who ever employed you, even if that person went into a phone booth before work everyday to don his/her "Super Asshole" costume.

I think these sorts of questions are really funny because who is going to tell the truth for any of them?

I've had the thought that it would be fun to go into an interview and when you get a question like that say... You know and I know that everyone who comes in here could lie to make themselves sound good, and no one in her right mind is going to tell you something true... but I won't.

If I had the option to hire you, I would. Best to you!

68. Thanks RainDog!

I didn't get any of those specifically -- a lot of "tell us about your background, and how it prepares you for this job," that kind of thing. One of the keepers actually joked about the "where do you see yourself in five years" question. He said he can't stand that one so he wouldn't ask it. :D I'd prepared a bunch of research ideas, so much of the time was spent going over those, and answering questions about specifics.

I talked with my dad beforehand about what he asks people (he runs a construction business)... he said he likes to come up with wacky questions like "what was the greatest moral dilemma you've faced in your career, and what did you do about it?" That would be a tough one!

Glad it went well, sweetie. The outfit looks perfect, too.

I wish I could go out for coffee with Lizzie, Sally, and Venus!

89. Probably wouldn't start until the fall

to give me some time to finish my PhD. I keep hoping the dissertation will write itself, but apparently it's not going to... :P

71. Hey Congrats
The best hiring managers should not care how you dress. 8 hours is a pretty long interview process. I assume they bounce you from person to person and ask you random questions.

If you don't mind me asking, what type of job were you interviewing for?

76. Thanks Pavulon

Yup, they had me set up meeting with individuals and small groups all day. The job is for a research biologist at the Philadelphia Zoo. It would be a total blast! :D

90. That would be great!
Finding a job in a field you enjoy is worth so much.

A quick google reveals a nice collection of tortoises and turtles in philly.
As a keeper (captive bred) of turtles and tortoises I think that would be cool to study those guys. Such questions as is the chicken factor ( the time it takes a basking turtle to jump from its log once it has recognized you are there) learned or genetic may stump the ages..

Good Luck!

Philly seems like a cool city -- lots of history, lots to do, and BLUE! So that's always a plus. :D

79. You are so right

I was popping lozenges all last night... and this morning i had a big cup of tea with honey.

My throat still feels kind of scratchy though -- i should have done some "warming up," you know, talking for 4 hrs straight, then 5 hrs, then 6...

80. EIGHT HOURS for a job interview? Are you applying to be the Pope or something?
It just seems like an awfully long interview.

I would make a lousy Pope, i'm pretty sure. ;)

It was for a research biologist position at the Philadelphia Zoo -- and i was EXHAUSTED by the end!

82. Forgive my poor memory - that was you posting recently about a job at a zoo? I think I'm
jealous now; not only do you get to work at a zoo with all those fascinating critters, but you can get a REAL CHEESESTEAK HOAGIE any time you want one!

(Though from your picture it's clear that you don't make a habit of overdoing it with the hoagies.)

Good luck to you!

83. No worries, Redstone!

It was me, unless there's another Lounger competing for *my* job! :D

If i get the job and you're ever in Philly, i would be THRILLED to give you a tour and take you out for a hoagie!

(And that's saying a lot because i'm an herbivore! ;) )

84. I used to live down there (Montgomery County), but haven't been in the city since 1980.
I probably wouldn't recognize the place, so I'll take you up on your generous offer of a tour some day...and hey, most places also make vegetable hoagies (or at least used to). I'll buy.

96. If it's in your best interest to get this job, then so be it.
Best regards in any case. Now it's your job to give it up so what you put in motion can work without your attention/expectations/fears/holding it from going forward, if you don't already know to do that.
