Just saw it a couple of months ago, after not seeing it for years. Amazing how well it holds up over time, and how applicable it is to times now.

8. It is eerie how it holds up. |
|
It's either life imitating art or art imitating life. Either way, it's creepy.
Hope you are doing well, SG!

9. Jason Robards won Best Supporting Actor that year |
|
for his role as Ben Bradlee in "All the President's Men."
As close to my heart as that film is and as much as I love to quote Bradlee, I think Ned Beatty did a better job in "Network" as Arthur Jensen. His dressing-down of Peter Finch ("And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature! And YOU... WILL... ATONE!") was absolutely masterful.

You watch that scene — and that's a long soliloquy — and you feel like you're the one being shredded.
I have great regard for Jason Robards, and he did a fine job with the Ben Bradlee character, but there just wasn't much to it.
Or maybe that's just my take on it, having worked with a few curmudgeonly editors. :)

12. And the lighting for that scene was perfect. |
|
He's so omnipresent he is the darkness of the room. It's all so very symbolic.

And the camera angles — the long, long table.
Beale seemed very small. :)

16. I have my moments of smart. |

;)
Beale was being consumed by the darkness that was Beatty's character just as he was being consumed by his handlers and viewers.
I'm getting chills thinking about it. :D

18. Even his show backdrop was black with only a spotlight upon him. |
|
He was given light and life by the whim of the ones in charge. It's comparable to the darkness and despair that is upon us now. The realization that we don't matter in the greater scheme of things when there are powerful greedy people at the helm.

21. And "Network" lost Best Picture to "Rocky" |
|
So, when people forget about some boring, crap, crowd pleasing movie about a boxer, "Network" will be regarded as an all-time classic. It is one of my very favorite films. It would have been great to see Ned Beatty get Best Supporting Actor (and I agree, it's a great performance)...it would have been a sweep of the acting awards...besides Beatrice Straight winning Best Supporting Actress, Faye Dunaway winning Best Actress and Peter Finch winning Best Actor.
