Ack! I pulled a muscle in my back and the IRS sent me a certified letter...

Fun times.

I have trouble with the the muscles between my shoulder blades, ever since HS. That problem will go away eventually. The IRS? Damn.

I was on unemployment a couple years ago. I cashed out my state retirement so I could pay my rent and not get evicted and sued. This was my 2005 return. Paid the 10% penalty for early withdrawal. Got the bright idea to amend the return and sent a letter explaining the situation about unemployment and respectfully requested that the 10% be refunded. Request denied. I can accept that. It was a gray area anyway. But what stunned me is that the IRS has now BILLED ME for the 10% I already paid. (No, they did not send the the amended amount to be refunded...)

Until this mess is straightened out, they'll seize whatever refund I'm due and also keep whatever rebate check the government is issuing this summer.

I need my refund to move. I need to file my return for Lelapin's financial aid.

Damn.

Damn. And of course there's no one to talk to on the weekend.

1. I've had something similar happen twice.
Once was back in the dark ages and it took months. The more recent time it was an automatic notice based on mismatching 1099 data, where I was paid for consulting work on 12/29 according to the client but because they mailed the check on 12/31 I didn't receive it until the following year. Fortunately, I knew that it could be questioned and had retained the envelope and photocopied the check. I had to write an explanatory letter and send documentation but it did get cleared up within a few weeks. YMMV.

2. I had a fun time convincing the IRS
that they did NOT owe me money. Eventually they figured it out and thanked me for my assistance.
