Quantum physics in my bedroom?
I have one of these lamps in my bedroom ceiling. It is enclosed in a glass thingie.

This night, awake in bed, I saw an odd thing: Brief, faint flashes of light coming from the lamp. Saw it twice, maybe five minutes apart. I checked to see if it was switched off. It was.

Can it be cosmic rays exciting the gas inside? Static electricity?

1. Prolly static discharges
Fluorescent lights are very sensitive to static electricity.

2. Interesting question.

Might just be magnetic fields causing the gas to floresce, cum Aurea Borialis (SP?). Could also just be your magnetic personality, too. I'd stick with that story if I were you.

most likely the lamp is wired reversed - the voltage difference between the phase and the earth is enough to activate the luminescent material.

Does the bulb (?) glow, even when turned off? If so, touching it should amplify the glowing.

Maybe it was just something it your power grid, not much is needed to get those glowing.

4. I've got compact fluorescents in almost all my lamps.
When it's dark, and I'm reaching for the switch on a lamp, I can see sparks inside the bulb as my hand approaches. As TXlib said, they're very sensitive to static. (That's why they're so efficient.)

5. Well, how do flourescent lights work?
What makes them light up?

Look that up and you'll have your answer.

8. Parallel universe-alternate (mem)brane
Obviously someone is flicking the switch in a parallel universe.

Since gravitons are not limited to three dimensional worlds they can leak from multidimensional brane to brane and into your bedroom.

Hooboy, watch your back.

12. Same thing
I have two of those in my ceiling fan in my bedroom. I've seen this phenomenon many times, quite enjoyable to watch. I've also sat and tried to make it happen you know (power 'o' the mind), not much happened did see a few flashes but those were probably just random things...or maybe I have the power....(soon it'll be like scanners)

18. That's what she said.
On a serious note, it's probably static electricity. They have argon gas in them.
