I do a quick estimate in January.

If I've been giving the government a little interest-free loan, I call it in as early as I can.

If I owe them, I wait until April to file.

I think this year I owe the feds <$5 and NY State about $100, so April it will be.

if they owe me, usually the first week of Feb (yeah, now but I'm still waiting on one more 1099)

this is a fairly typical year, the state owes us enough to pay the Feds, so I'll file the State returns in the next few days and when the check comes in, I'll file the Fed with the state refund
