Is Sushi Fatty? Trying to loose some weight
I'm trying loose some weight and am watching what I eat alot more. One of the things I love is sushi. I buy it at the grocery store. I usually buy the California roll (white rice and seaweed wrapped w/cucumber,avocado,& crab meat)

Question: Is this fatty? I mean, I was thinking on having sushi on days I skip a salad for lunch or dinner. Anyone know? Thanks!

2. I always thought it was pretty good for you,
as long as you go easy on the soy sauce.

3. A little starchy because of the rice, but generally not high in fat that I know of.
And there isn't a whole lot of rice so I wouldn't worry about it.

You could try brown rice sushi if you want to make sure you're getting nice hefty vitamin-filled calories instead of empty ones though. :)

4. California rolls can be fatty. 8-10g, to be specific.
Lots of other types of sushi are much lower in fat. Bear in mind, a good portion of this fat in the California roll probably comes from the avocado that's in it, so it's not exactly "bad" fat.

As far as having some kind of store-bought prepared food for lunch, sushi isn't a bad idea, compared to many of your other options.

6. Here's an interesting web site:
http://www.sushifaq.com/sushi-calories.htm

Note that the numbers are per roll, not per piece. I assume that one of those little supermarket dishes is one roll. Personally, I tend to worry more about sodium with these sushi trays...

7. Worry more about calories and carbs and sugar.
"Fatty" being what makes you fat has been pretty much debunked.

If you want to fatten cattle, you feed them grain, not fat.

OK, so they can't digest fat very well, but you get the point. Archaeological evidence of obesity in humans corresponds with the mass cultivation of grain.

It's the rice. An all-sashimi diet is expensive, but much better for you. Get your carbs from edamame.

P.S. As another poster said, sushi with brown rice would be better (lower glycemic index — rate of introducing sugar into the blood), but I've never seen sushi made with brown rice... ever.

10. If you're concerned about the rice, try sashimi,
which is the sushi without the rice!
