1. Actually, there's something to this.
Capsaicin, the ingredient that gives peppers their heat, does have medicinal properties.

2. and on top of that, it just clears the sinuses - all of that sneezing.
It's always a good idea to eat spicy food when you have a cold.

3. Yes it does, and what a pleasant way to self-medicate it is.
Thai Tod Yum soup is really good for a cold. In fact, anything combining hot pepper and citrus juice does wonders for me.

4. My favorite is Healthy Choice chicken noodle soup
doctored with garlic, parsley, and hot pepper. Viva hot pepper!

5. That was always my grandmother's cure
She claimed there wasn't a head cold in the world that was a match for horseradish and garlic.

I'm feeling a little stuffy. Hmm, where did I put that wasabi....

6. Garlic...
It helps drain the sinuses and makes you feel generally better. That always helps too.

8. hot and sour soup, really hot Hunan or Szechuan chinese
good Indian Curry or a nice pho with fresh jalapeno peppers are all wonderful when you have a bad cold, chest congestion or sinusitis.

I take an envelope of ramen noodles, add hot peppers, and some frozen mixed veggies and then you have a sort of ersatz (sp) pho that is just great.

9. Yes, nothing like a little horseradish
to clear the nasal passages.

The "real" horseradish, of course, not the packaged horse-radishy white sauce.

But, my favorite "cold remedy" is still a good hot toddy.

:hi:

10. Only if your cold is a head cold....
You wouldn't want to do that for a stomach bug. Spicy food has SOME medicinal properties, but its not a cure all.

11. yep I get chronic sinus congestion and spicy food does the trick..
but since moving to Buenos Aires I have to be creative about finding spicy foods. Can't find any chili peppers that aren't from a wimpy strain and I went out to some very expensive sushi the other night solely to get a decent dose of wasabi but alas was foiled again
