WHY do I have to deal with anxiety issues. WHY?
(I seem to be worrying about this, or something. :P)

I called the university to leave a message with the Dir. of Grad. Studies concerning my wicked good news from last Friday. I would think that I would be able to leave a message effortlessly, but NO - I had to stutter a bit. I sounded a little nervous. I conveyed what I wanted to say, including all the proper thank you's, but again: stutter stutter stutter blah blah blah.

I am so mad that this aspect of myself. I want it GONE. I need a brain surgeon to remove whatever dysfunction I carry that causes my nervousness. ARGH! :banghead:

2. Yar. So here's my current anxiety. Did I leave a bad impression?
I don't think anyone but the person listening to the message will know, but it's hard not to think of it.

Thanks for the group hug.

10. Hey Writer,
I am sure you did NOT leave a bad impression. I am sure you sounded honest and sincere and concerned about your position. One thing that may help -- when I know in advance that I am going to leave a message I try to prepare a little "paragraph" of what needs to be said.

13. Hey, I'm a phonemail dork myself...
I reeeeellly suck at leaving messages. I've found in my experience, people either find it amusing or they plain just don't notice.

The dorkiest message I have probably EVER left was when I first called my now hubby on the phone... I even said "Oh my god, I sound like a fucking dork!" and hung up. Obviously he didn't think too poorly of me for it, as we're married!

4. It's either a lifetime affliction, or something to learn from

You will likely always have these responses, but maybe you will be able to modify your responses to them over time.

I wish you luck.

I personally know it's an up and down story.

5. Give yourself a break. Intelligent people understand stuttering and don't give it a second thought.

7. I have to rehearse messages before I leave them.
I tend to stammer when I feel put on the spot, and nothing does that for me like an answering machine. If I know I'm going to leave a message, or suspect I might, I actually speak it out loud once or twice before calling.

9. (voice of God): "Why NOT you?"
Seriously, I'll trade you my TWO panic/anxiety attack producing phobias. Celexa is cheap, but everyday meds are not something I've ever remembered well, and a "Meds have worn off, enjoy the panic attack" at 3AM on some night is hard on the cardiovascular system.
