AARRGGHH!! Just got dissed at Ministerial Assoc!!
I'm just getting back to the office after a community ministerial association meeting. We were starting to plan the Good Friday service, and the pastor whose church is hosting it said, when I volunteered to read scripture or something, that he'd rather I not have a speaking part. His church, it seems, would be offended if I stood on their chancel. I asked why, since his denomination ordains women, and is a mainline church. His answer? "Your church has gay people." My church has gay people!!! Listen, pal, so does your church. Mine just treats 'em like human beings!!!!!!

This really nice guy who pastors a non-denominational church, and is a licensed counseling social worker, somehow calmed the situation to the point that I am reading scripture, but the guy whose church is hosting isn't real happy about it.

Look, fundies, you can treat me like crap all you want. I'm a Christian, and I'm staying a Christian, whether you like it or not!!!!

Thank you.

1. You are so lovely!
Isn't it a shame how many people pretend to be Christian?

2. My Bahai and UU friends keep telling me I'd be happier with them,
but a)I believe the things that make a person a Christian--you know, that Jesus is the Messiah and whatnot. and

b) Leaving to go to those other faiths is just letting the terrorists win.

Thanks for your kind words, redwitch! And for the hug!!

5. You're UUC, right?
Stick it out. As far as I'm concerned, you folks are the kind who give Christians a Good Name. And even if you aren't UUC, more people like you are needed to balance out people like that other minister.

11. Oops. My bad.
Edited on Tue Feb-05-08 03:26 PM by FloridaJudy
I meant to write UCC. That's what I get for posting with a head cold. Sorry. Our local UCC is called UUCC (University United Church of Christ) and I dropped the wrong letter.

edited to add: a local whackjob confused the UUCC with the UU's (my own denomination) and threatened to burn down the wrong church. She later went after the Unity congregation, so maybe she just had a fixation on churches that start with the letter "U".

4. Me, too. Thanks KW.
Yeah, this non- or inter- denom guy is really cool. I like him a lot. He never lets you know where he stands on the controversial issues, but does treat everyone with dignity. I think his background as a counselor is a huge help in situations like this.

7. Son of a bitch. That's rotten!
Listen, pal, your church has people who don't honor the Sabbath, and that's a COMMANDMENT, so fuck off.

8. Your church has gay people, so you can't speak at a church service
Why, that certainly makes a great deal of sense. Gays do make you incapable of speech.

16. I actually like that conclusion.
Every church has gay people. So every church should be very, very, quiet.

At least until some kid farts, then bedlam.

14. My answer:
Jesus had prostituted in His church, would He be allowed to preach in yours?

(And for the record, I believe that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' spouse and was cast into the prostitute role later, but I'm sure Jesus would not have had a problem with either gays or prostitutes joining His ministry.)

19. I always like the KJV of I Corinthians 13:1-13.
<1> Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
<2> And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
<3> And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
<4> Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
<5> Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
<6> Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
<7> Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
<8> Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
<9> For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
<10> But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
<11> When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
<12> For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
<13> And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

20. I like that one, but people often glaze over when it's read.
It's too bad really, as it's an awesome passage.

23. I prefer the KJV because I've always felt "agape" translates better...
...as "Charity." You could use "Brotherly Love" or "love for all people" which are also "acceptable" translations, but with the Hebrew and Semitic traditions and constraints to alms giving and support for the poor, I always felt the intent of the passage was general rather than specific.

Does sound nicer at weddings when you use "love" though.
