While driving today, I listened to three songs about Massachusetts. Guess which ones? |
|
They were:
1) "Massachussets" by the Bee Gees. (Natch.)
2) "Sweet Baby James" by James Taylor. (I'll bet you guessed that one, too.)
3) "Road Runner" by Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. (Never heard of that one? You're missing a fun song if you haven't. You know how many songs are described as 'three-chord songs?' This song has only TWO chords.)
Six hours on the road today, but it was a good and productibe day. I even go to visit Rice City, Rhode Island, and found out why it's named Rice City, even though there's no city there (not even a TOWN), and no rice has ever been grown in the area.

Well, you're a man of mysteries tonight!
I'm not aquainted with any of those songs...
And Rice City? I'm stumped there as well...
Glad you had a very productive day!
I'll be heading out a bit later for another poetry reading at the open mic night at the Coffee Cartel!
And then home to watch the returns roll in...
:hi:

3. I stopped in rice City to interview an old guy, for the basis of a magazine article... |

just on a whim. I said to him, "Well, here I am in Rice City. And I, well, don't see a city anywhere around here. And no rice paddies, either. I'm betting that you can tell me why that is."
Ended up talking with him for over an hour, with the DVR (Digital Voice Recorder) running, and taking notes all the while.
I found out something important today. I can get people to talk to me. People who don't usually open up to strangers, especially to strangers who are wearing a suit and tie, and driving a Volvo.
And they'll tell me some remarkable stories, like that of an 82-year-old guy who is filling up his time by working on planning for the 200-year anniversary of the church in his little village, which celebration is five years away. He's planning to see the fruit of his efforts...when he's 87.
I'm catching the scent of a second career on the breeze, here.
There's still an awful lot of America out there, if you only take the time to look for it.

I had it on a CD. Great song.
