1. I have a family of them that live in my backyard .
There is a old shed back there that is their home.

2. I have a family of them in the attic
they can make quite a racket. I go up there every so often ti try to shoo them out of there, but the babies just poke their heads out of the empty boxes that they've been playing in, looking cute and clueless. I haven't found anything yet that actually SCARES them. Oh well-possums only have a three year lifespan, so they'll grow up and move away from home soon!

4. FWIW, Opossums are not native to California.
I'd really hate them if they didn't visit me once a year to glean all the figs out of my trees. I hate picking up squishy figs off the ground.

Here's the single fella we had this year. Past years we have had a family. I guess times are tough for opossums, too.

7. They are also mean as hell if they feel really threatened
Your picture is something I have actually seen. A possum was at the bottom of the stairwell outside a dorm at my college and when I got a little too close for comfort it opened its mouth and hissed agressively showing a whole bunch of needle teeth.
I also had one come right up to the sliding glass door at my house and peer inside. Didn't seem much afraid of us. I WON'T go near them after my close encounter. Mean suckers.

8. had one give birth on my window ledge
of course this was an Australian ringtail not what you guys think of as possums.

Cutest thing I've ever seen - watching the mothers pouch shift and two tiny little heads pop out that looked something like this

11. Possums making a come back here in New York City
I've found two baby possums over the last two years curled up in my garbage cans. There has already been a racoon resurgence in NYC. According to the NY Times, the counties in mostly rural NY State that have the most racoons are the five boroughs of NY City. They are taking the eco niche of giant rats. Most NYC racoons live in the sewers.

14. My cat put one in the closet once!
It was a baby. I think he brought it in to play with but no doubt it got ugly on him. He staked the closet out for a couple of days, and I'm like, "what is up with this cat?" My wife said "I think there is something in there." I swept the dresses aside and there was this hissing red eyed thing. I had to pick it up with BBQ tongs and put it outside. It walked away like nothing happened.

16. I have bird seed on a window ledge so the cat can be entertained
and a possum always comes to eat around 6:00 pm. Drives the cat crazy and the possum hisses at him! We don't need much entertainment out here in the sticks, you know bug zappers and all!
